Marlin XL7
« on: May 19, 2009, 07:05:04 AM »
Wondering if anyone has this Marlin bolt action and how they like it?  Just looking at a 25/06.
Looked good ,felt good, has the accu trigger, same barrel set up as the Savage but a better looking action.  Interesting in hearing how well they shoot.

A hunting pard just bought one of the factory-scoped package deals, and it turned out to be pretty accurate - much better than it's modest cost would indicate.
Accurate enough to merit a better quality scope, than the one that's supplied in the package deal.

Since it has an adjustable trigger, IMHO it's the sleeper among all the various economy centerfires from Savage (Stevens 200), Remington (710/770), and Mossberg (ATR).

I know of at least one that's been rebarreled to .35 Whelan, but I'm waiting for the short-action XS-7, so I can see about having a .243 or .308 rebored to .338 Federal or .358 Win.

I'm thrilled with the 30-06 I picked up.  It will shoot just over moa with just about every 150 grain bullet I've put through it.  I've heard others say that theirs like the heavier bullets better.  I've got to get around to handloading for this one, but have been just too lazy of late.  It may not have quite the finish that a Remington 700 may have, but it's more than worth the money.   This is with an older Leupold 4x scope.

It's a shame - they introduced the XL7W (wood stocked version), but then made that model only available in .30-06 and .270.  Guess they figured wood purists were only interested in the 2 "classic calibers".  Thing is I (and I'd venture many others) already have rifles in those and don't need any more.  I really wish they'd have made the 7mm-08 or .243 available in the wood version.

Oh well.  Maybe next year.

I have the .270 and my results are real similiar it J'hawker. If you want a rifle to get the job done buy it! You won't be sorry, you can even buy 2 guns for the price of most other single guns.

Brother got one recently.  Says it's a good gun.  Not quite as small of groups vs. the Savages he has/had, but still shoots well.  A little break-in may tighten the groups up.

Thanks, guys for the replies.  Liked the synthetic stock but sounds like the wood may be the way to go.

My pard paid $320 OTD a few months ago, ordered sight unseen from/through a local FFL.

I took mine to the local range (80 yards) this morning with hand loads. They were Remington 150 grain PSP bullets and H414 powder. The smallest group measured 3/4" with 56.5 grains of H414 and the larger one measured 1" with 55 grains of H414. I can't say enough about this gun. The trigger is nice. I have mine adjusted as light as it will go. It isn't what I consider a "hair trigger" but is very easy to pull and doesn't cause me to "pull" shots like most guns I have shot that didn't have adjustable triggers. Based on this I plan to buy another Marlin XL7 in another caliber some day.

I couldn't agree more on the cost part. I put a Luepold scope on it that I traded for so I have less than $500 in the whole setup. I am very pleased.

Gee !!! Swampman Remington and Marlin are now under the same company , but as I understand not yet under the same roof as of yet .

Why then nothing said about dropping the   whole idea and buy a good remington rifle from the state
YOURASLIPPING.

Reading all the posts on the xr7, I am too thinking about having a look before Remington moves into the same house.

If you'd asked what to buy, I'd have said Remington.  I think the Marlin is better than a Howa, Savage, Stevens, or a Mossberg.

Well I was watching on Marlins owners forum  to see what the gun in the field handled and there has not been many complaints. I like the Savage myself, for having a magazine clip where the Marlin only has the blind magazine , which I see- being slower to load and unload .I'll leave the 336 home if I am in and out the truck and over many fences . At least with some of the other brands you still can quickly dump them out of the bottom at once in your hand .Having to chamber every round is a pain to unload
For what your buying  " Money Wise" it appears a good product  for the investment.
They should start to show up at dealers here soon and will have a good look.

Swampy "the Remingtons " SPS  are almost a "thou" up here in Ontario Canada otherewise I was going to pick one up. Would need to sell two Marlins  and a winnie  to afford it now.
Take care
Happy

In terms of quality, I think the XL7 is head and shoulders and everything else from the ankles up above the Remington M710/770.  The Mossberg has some design features I find unacceptable as well.  From a fit and finish standpoint, I like the XL7 much better than the Stevens 200 as well.

Reports continue to come in showing the XL7's are great shooters for the price and I like the overall design.  I think Marlin has a winner.

Just out of curiosity, what are they?  I've not handled the ATR's aside from looking at them in shops, but I'd always heard they were decent enough.

well the barrels are good, i understand shaw makes them. however the triggers (until the new "lightning" one they have thats a ripoff of marlin's trigger) suck. the stocks are flimsy and cheap looking and the triggerguards are part of the stock. the barrels on all the ones i have seen are bedded badly, basically lean against the channel in the stock hard.

the feel is like a toy to me, not smooth and powerful like most bolts. the bolt handle is kind of pressure-mated to the bolt body and can come right off, or worse yet, twist and give enough that one thinks the bolt is closed, yet leaves the lugs not fully down, which is asking for a nightmare.

all in all they aren't worth the safety concerns for me.

My experience with Marlins is that they use soft steel, seems to me that these bolt actions of theirs won't hold up in the long run?  Has anyone put their Marlin bolt actions through the ringer to see how they do?

Chris, could you elaborate on the experience that led you to believe that Marlin uses steel softer than other gun makers.  They've been making guns since 1863, have you heard of any failures?  I don't recall hearing of any, has anyone?  Remington owns them now so I imagine
they'll use the same steel that Remington uses.
