I remember reading a story in Outdoor Life magazine 35 or 40 years ago, on the This Happened to Me page. A fellow and his son were out at night turtle trapping, and they were in a jon boat. With a couple turtle's in a burlap bag. The father reached back to get something off the floor of the boat, and one of the turtles had crawled out of the bag. After the turtle removed one of his fingers, he was a bit more careful on how he transported turtles from then on. gypsyman

How do you say hungry in Turtle? Pigeon mistook that turtle for a friend!

The Common Snapping Turtle
I've never seen one in the flesh, but it looks a bit different from the pictures I've seen online. Sure about that?

The Common Snapping Turtle

Looking at the shell I would say that is not the snapping turtle that is common to sothern MN. The shell is too smooth and has a rounded back on it. I'm not sure what kind of turtle it is, but a common snapping turtle it aint.

there are some serious laws on the books these days protecting snapping turtles.  some dude in Vidor got into some  hot water because he had an old giant shell from one.

I don't know what kind of turtle is in the video but snappers have real jagged shells on top and the one in the video looks pretty smooth

Guess I should have watched that on something bigger than my 9" laptop screen.  I didn't notice the smooth shell.

Anyway, I found the source video from a news story.  Its in a park in Brazil.

It's a tortoise.

Now that is very interesting. I never knew that turtles would do that. I have never seen one snap at anything. I always assumed they were slow at feeding.

Another interesting thing about this is how the pigeons did not perceive the turtle as a threat. I think we've all seen footage of crocodiles bursting out of the water to snatch an antelope. In this case, the turtle just walked right up to his prey and grabbed it. Amazing.

I was thinking the film was probably shot in a zoo or whatever, and someone stuck some pet or pen raised pigeons in there for it to eat. Whoever was behind the camera knew enough to focus on the turtle and did not jump when the pigeon got grabbed.

Chilachuck,

I was thinking the same thing. It looks like a learned behavior to me, and a particularly profitable one for the wily, quick, speedy, rapid turtle.

If it was in the USofA I would say it was a large Pond Slider. They have the orange and black underside. Lots of folks call them painted turtles. Since this was shot in Brazil, who knows.
