How quiet are 22short rounds from a handgun? are they quieter then a airgun or about the same? I like to do night hunting and i found somewhere to do it but it close to homes but it lawful to shoot there and i got the owner permission to shoot at night for some varmints.

22 shorts are not quiet. They are close to a normal 22 report. The CCI CB's are quieter but what you need are the Colibri 20 grain with no powder from Aguila. They are about 500 FPS primer propelled only & quieter than an air rifle when fired from a 22 rifle. The sound of the firing pin & bullet hitting the target is louder than the gun going off. Read the reviews & buy from Midwayusa.com. Depending on your uses they may not be enough if you plan coon hunting or some other mid sized critter.

Shooting 22 CB either Longs or shorts out of my rifle are quieter than using my 177 Gamo rifle.
But those are CB's I think the Longs shoot better and other than letting the friends kids shoot in the back yard I use the longs for varmint and pest control around the house.  I let the kids shoot the shorts out of the tube fed guns caus it will hold 25 or more of the things and less time is needed relaoding.  Again these are CB's.  they look the same but have a smaller 30 grain bullet and a reduced powder load.
If you are talking about shorts then they are loud.  Every it as loud as the Long rifles.

Oh the other cool thing about the CB is they are quick to reload and a couple of rats have fallen to my 22 rifle while trying to eat the dog food container while the pellet rifle has only been able to kill one at a time and as i am pulling down on the barrel the others scatter behind cover.  The only down side to the CB's are they richochette on hard surfaces so be sure of your back ground!

CCI 22shorts. that why i am staying with my 760 airgun cause there not loud and they don't richochette on hard surfaces.

I have found the Shorts are fairly quiet in my rifle and CB's are real quiet in my rifle.  But both are fairly loud in a pistol.

Which pistol??? Re: 22shorts

In a revolver (yes, I know, not really a "pistol" but a revolver but many are sloppy with language), the short blows gas out the cylinder gap and makes a lot of noise.

In a fixed barrel gun, semi auto or single shot... depends. Longer barrel less noise.

I was shocked the first time I fired "standard velocity" long rifle from a rifle. LESS noise than my air gun. (Old Benjamin BB/pellet.) I didn't need hearing protection indoors. Finding standard velocity ammo is a problem except with those who supply target shooters. Much preferred for competition. You might want to hunt up some ammo of this sort and test it...

As said, the BB/CB ammo is much lower in noise. Colibri below that. Also less in power. No big deal for rats, but much drop at distance... Another challenge to use. The old Remington 550 semi auto (with the Carbine Wms. Floating chamber) will semi auto .22 CB shorts but not longs. Gap is covered. Find one of the latest models (from the 1950s) with grooved receiver and really terrorize the fur balls. Luck.

Those little colibri rounds work for knocking off carpenter bees  and mice but that is about it!
They barely break 350 fps with a 20 grain bullet. The Super Colibri does about 415 fps. contrary to what the
manufacturer says. I use the RWS BB and CB caps. They get about 700 fps and are good rodent medicine.
These dinky rounds kinda have a "cool factor" going on too...
