Possible Pedersoli Sharps Issue
« on: May 19, 2009, 12:51:12 PM »
Well, since I am waiting for a bunch of loading stuff to come in I decided to spend this afternoon doing a pre-cleaning on my new (never fired) Pedersoli Sharps.

First bore buttered patch to run through the barrel came out brown! The bore looks smooth, but the brown concerns me as I have never had a bore produce a brown patch. Black, yes, brown no.

Do you guys think it might be some light rust? I am going to scrub it really well, but am concerned over this as I planned on this rifle being a precision bench target rifle.

Thoughs? Could they have used a brown factory lube in the barrel?

I cleaned it for the better part of an hour and got it to come out pretty clean, but not perfect like I like. Still getting some brown.

Is there a product I should use on it? For cleaning I used a combination of T/C bore cleaner, Breakfree & T/C Bore Butter)

Lots of barrels will show brown patches after they are blued. If you're worried find somebody with a bore scope, but if it were me I'd go shooting and not worry.

If you're shooting black powder, clean with water then oil. For smokeless I like homemade Ed's Red or Shooter's Choice.

Harley, I'm only guessing ... dried cutting oil from when they broached the bore or as Nobade said - possible bluing.
Take a bore light and give the bore a look see to also insure there is no light rusting in it.

Suggestion:  Pure gum turpentine, not the distilled spirit stuff.  Warm some up until it's hot and swab the bore with a loose patch.  Let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes.  Then about 20 swipes with a 50 cal bronze bore brush.  Then patch it with a tight patch.  Repeat the process a couple of times if necessary.  When the patch 'squeaks' going down the bore - the lands and grooves are clean

John Boy, did a similar process in the second hour of cleaning last night. Still getting some light brown out, but bore is squeeking and looks clear.

I am going to get a bore scope to check it more closely.

I also suspect a hand full of bullets down the bore will help considerably as well.

Thanks for all you guys help.
