Author Topic: At this point I am about finished with Ruger (Read 5202 times)

I bought a new .357 SP101 earlier this year. The B/C gap was so tight that the gun would jam up after it was heated up by shooting a few rounds.

Sent it back to Ruger. They have had it for a month. I call to inquire to it's status and all they can tell me is that it is there. They havent even evaluated it yet. Cant say when they will get to it cant say how long it is going to take. If they keep it much longer they will have had it longer than I have.

But at least they are repairing and returning LCPs and SR9s within a week of reciept right? I guess since my defective gun isnt part of a high profile recal I am S.O.L.

To top it off this is the 3rd new problematic Ruger I have bought in the last four years and I dont think I will be buying anymore.

I had a problem with a Smith and returned it. They actually worked on the wrong thing; but, promptly returned it. I in turn returned it after calling and enclosing another not specifying what the problem was on the second prompt return, all was in order. The did a great job on customer service and very promptly, twice. The only complaint was the wasted effort on the first try. They actually fixed something that wasn't broke and returned promptly

Have you considered that they might be doing things in the order they got them and with the huge push with the SR models and the LCPs perhaps yours is simply in line behind some others?

Yes perhaps I have considered that. Also maybe they should not have said the repair would take four weeks and when the four weeks are up tell me now they dont know how long it will take. Bad customer service IMO.

My gun aint an LCP or SR9 but I still paid hard earned money for it.

Before you give up on Ruger you may want to send an e-mail to their CEO and tell him about your problem. I would think they would want to take care of a good customer. If I was in charge of your case I would send you a new gun and add on some extras. Of course I do not work for Ruger but they really do need to take a good look at their service if it is this poor and fix it.

They took around 5 months to fix my Vaquero if I remember correctly. It needed a a new grip frame, trigger guard was butchered. when I received the gun they had replaced/repaired at no cost to me the ejector rod, rod housing, base pin and a few other minor things. Yes they are VERY slow but you may end up with a surprise in the end. They will send you an itemized receipt of all the work they did. However if not for these extra parts that really did not need replacing I would have been quite dissatisfied with their CS. Now all I can say regarding them is that they are slow as molasses, but they will get it right eventually.

I had the same problem with Colt. Had to send my Anaconda in. Got it back pretty quick, but the problem wasn't fixed. A guy at the range found what was wrong, so I sent it back a second time. They finally fixed the gun, but I always wondered what they did the first time?

One possibility (and it's just a guess based on the way I know that repair shops for other types of items work) is that certain smiths are trained and practiced to work on a specific model (or type, ie the semi-autos vs revolvers). Depending on how many of one they sell they might just have a lot more people available to work on that model. IE, if they got 15 guys doing the semi's and 2 working on revolvers, then depending on backlog the revolver guys might take a lot longer.

Again, just a guess, but having working in a service department (for computers, not guns) in the past, I have seen similar scenarios.

Maybe it' just my good luck, but I have owned Rugers since back in the 60's and Smith's in the 50's. I have Remingtons, Winchesters, Sako's, Marlins, Glocks, Springfields and others. In over 50 years of shooting, I have never sent any firearm to the factory for repair. Considering the quantity of firearms being manufactured for military and civilian markets, it seems the factories have a pretty good record.

However, there is no excuse for poor service. If you were to send nearly any firearm to a gunsmith for repair, it could easily take months. Not trying to make excuses here, just trying to put things in perspective. The trick is to have enough guns that you don't need or miss the one being repaired or customized.

Per customer service it has been it shipping prep for over a week.

For what its worth, I had to send my S.R.H. back for repair.....only a few months after I had got it. It was jamming up after a few rounds...cyclinder wouldn't turn...also had some unusual marks on the face of the cyclinder, almost appeared as though it had been dropped during assenbly. I had mentioned that in my note . After three weeks , I had my SRH back , fixed the problem...all they said was replaced , etc ,etc and guess what... new cyclinder....and they definatly did some work on the trigger/action. It had a typical Ruger trigger....now it is smooth and crisp, breaks around 4 1/2 lbs on the single action pull. I can't say anything bad about their c/s..........Thats my story....regards

Well I am tired of the run around and tired of being lied to. For two weeks in a row I have been told it was ready to ship and would be shipped. Two weeks in a row they have failed to follow through on their word.

Ruger can keep their trash I wont be buying anything else from them.

Finnaly it came back. I put 150 rounds through it about as fast as I cared to and got it good and warm. No hiccups so far so it appears to be fixed. The B/C gap however still does not appear to be even. It still narrows towards the top strap on three of five chambers. Maybe this is normal I dont know I havent handled very many of these guns but as long as it works...

On another note I found a very accurate load for it while testing it for function-while it was gone I bought 105 gr SWC Lee mold and this bullet over 5.6 grs of Universal Clays cut a big ragged hole right to point of aim at 15 yards.

Consider yourself lucky. I sent a Blackhawk back for repair a while back. Ruger Service Group got my address mixed up and UPS couldn't deliver it back to me, they sent it back to New Hampshire. Well, they figured out what they did wrong and shipped it again, successfully this time.

Now they have another gun of mine for repair, a stripped out ejector rod screw hole. It came that way when I bought it used from Gunbroker.com. They are repairing it at no cost. I can't really complain about either repair or the time it takes. I certainly can't complain about them being the most fun guns to shoot.

I really think your missing the posters point here? If they were producing quality guns, in the first place, there would be no reason to send any gun back for repairs hence no getting in line after the purchase.
Ruger better get their act together, or face loosing a lot of customers. Then, the wailing and crying would start.
My method of dealing with Ruger is to only buy used guns and then inspect them thoroughly, before the purchase. They do have some strange business practices?

Why should they? For over a decade guns have been a secondary business at Ruger. They still sell all they need to - or have time for - so why worry about CS or product quality? Better quality would mean higher prices, fewer sales, time taken away from their core business. I've bought my last new Ruger too.

The most inexpensive, and best way to larger profits is to produce a part, or product right the first time in an efficient manner. Since there are some very bright folks at Ruger, you can be assured that this is their goal as it is in most other gun companies.

Travis, won't work Rugers only have the one spring S&Ws have two springs to operate the mechanism. They'd have to drasticly reengineer their guns.

Travis , I have a redhawk that will stand side by side with any S&W built today . Yes i had a trigger job done . It can be and is done by compent gunsmiths ever day. When you look at cost its still a deal.

That's right Steve along with all who have had the plesure to shoot it . I agree out of the box S&W has a better trigger and older S&W's along with Colts have better triggers but if you know a smith with the ability you can get a trigger equal to a new S&W and that's no cut on S&W .
