Will an Electric Golf Cart pull a deer out of the woods ?
« on: May 21, 2009, 05:35:19 AM »
I am thinking about getting a golf cart .
Not the regular golf course kind, but 1 that is jacked up with bigger tires.

I want to use it to ride part way to my stands and still be able to get a deer out of the woods.

I hunt in south GA with pretty level land and not much mud .

I have heard about the gas ones being really quiet , but the electric is what i really want?
Can't get any quieter than that.

Not planning on spending the money for a "Bad Boy Buggie"  but am looking for some opinions.

Let me know any experiences you have had , good or bad, with any types ....

Thanks, Brent

I do not see why it would not.
I have used my fathers to take a deer back to the barn.  I added a plywood removable shelf to the rear facing seat and tossed the deer there.
The little deer in NC are small, and if you can carry 4 people on a golf cart or two and bags why would it not carry a 50-150 pound deer?
Dad was not happy I modified his golf cart to include the shelf and a rifle scabbard but they were all bolt on parts that were un bolted and the cart was washed before I left.  OH easy way to wash them is to load it in the back of the pick up and take it to the coin car wash and wash both at the same time.

Had not thought about loading it up ,  i was thinking I had to drag it out with a rope or something.

Does anyone know how long the batteries last on an electric cart ?

I have wired in chargers for a local golf course and they charged them every nite, just hook up you charger to a time clock and your all set.
It will cost you 2 strokes per deer.

I hunt with a guy who uses one like you want . It works well unless you go thru. deep mud or over really rough ground , stuff a 4wheeler would have trouble with or very steep hills . What happens is you get an elec. smell like the motor is getting over heated . They are pretty strong for what they are . He lays the deer where the golf bags go and straps them on .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Most golf carts are hauling at least 2 full sized men and their bags of clubs.  Unless you shoot monster sized deer, you shouldn't have any problem.  Plug it in for a recharge each evening and you'll likely be fine.

Regular carts with turf tires go pretty well on dry grass on the course... but I would wonder if this jacked up cart is 4WD.  I've seen some that are, but that would be my only concern.  A rut in the ground or small, unavoidable brush pile might hang it up and cause you to spin with just a RWD cart.

I would have to apologize to some people for my "gotta have 4WD" attitude, but I've just suffered 4 years of "settling" for a RWD pickup that I've gotten stuck in my yard at least a half dozen times.  Would you traverse the woods with a RWD 4wheeler?  No, you'd have to rap the throttle just to get over the rough spots.

As far as battery life... we charge our two carts at work each night and never run outta juice with intermittent use all day.

I wish I would know the name of the material.  It is a white plastic sheet, maybe 1.8 to 3 /16 thick and flexible but strong. Myself as the top "dog" and 4  four legged types pulled out a moose quarter over leaves, twigs and other obstructions  in central BC some years ago. If you can hook up something similar or make a traverse( spelling) it would help. Those golf cart motors have a lot of torque.

24 years ago I worked at two country clubs.  We had "Club Cars" at both.  You could normally get about 1.5 rounds of golf out of a fully charged one.  The last part of the second round would be really slow but it would get us back to the club house.  If I remember correctly there were 6 batteries in each cart.  Two grown men, two golf bags and a cooler full of beer.  No problem with one guy, a rifle and a deer.  Also we used one for pushing the ball picker on the range.  The picker weighed probably over a hundred if I remember right.  Also had a modified one that had a flat bed on the back with four LARGE coolers that would be full of ice, beer and cokes.  Would easily carry all of that and two teen agers to drive the course most of the day during tournaments.  Put your deer on the back or get one of those plastice deer sleds and it'll drag your deer easily.

I'm disabled. I can read up on how to modify these electric carts...and buy the stuff to do it....but I can't handle doing it. So I can't do the work myself. I know how to do it, but I physically just can't do it.

Last year I began doing some research on these carts. The Bad Boy touts themselves as a 4WD cart, when in fact the cart is no more than 2 slip differential drives. So, at any given point only one wheel in front and one in the back are driving at any point in time.

I live in Pa. (Near Pittsburgh...GO PENS!!!) and around here we have hills. Now....my daughter-in-law (sweet kid) is from the Detroit area (Yeah...a Red Wings fan....made for some interesting weekends) and in the Detroit area, it's flat as a pancake. So, she thinks what we have are mountains. But they are just hills. If you want mountains, go to the Laurel Mountains....then you got mountains!!!

Anyway, I ended up with a cart guy in Lousiana building me one. With shipping cost to Pgh. of $500, he put more options and better stuff on it than any cart builder in Pa. would quote me.

Now, my cart has a lift kit, 10" tires (I think for mud 'n hills ten inch are a minimum) an upgrade to a 48-volt controller and motor with a ton of torque, and probably the most important item.....a limited slip differential in the rear end. What this is (LSD) is essentially make the rear drive a posi-traction. The only time it's not is when the cart is making an extreme hard left or right turn. (There is a reason for that...and I won't explain unless you want to know). Also, the battery wiring is upgraded to 4 gauge to accept the larger voltage. There are other modifications that I won't mention.

This cart is quiet and has gone up any gas well road or hill I want to go. (Now...if your an out of control person.....that's a different story). I did have to install a set of front disc brakes because coming down hills and stopping was getting a bit scary with only factory rear drum brakes. Much better with 4 wheel brakes.

As far as hauling....no problem with deer. I've thrown my deer on the back, bunggied 'em in and gone up any hill around here. You figure, those carts were made to handle 2 guys at 230lbs, plus golf bags....2 @ 60lbs.

Now, if your gonna stick with the stock 36-volt system, your not gonna have the torque that a 48-volt system will get you. But, if you just cruzin on flat ground and not thru mud or deep grass 'n stuff, you'll probably be just fine. I wouldn't recommend goin with larger than 10" tires with a stock 36-V system, cause it takes juice to turn those wheels.

That's my HO on this. Here is a pic of my buggy. I hauled one buck and 2 doe on it last year.  ;D

I believe that a golf cart good pull a deer out of the woods, if the terrain was not to steep or muddy etc. You would be better off with a solid ATV, as they are made for such work and have the gearing to match the chores needing done. :)

if your going for the electric cart, get a newer modern one.if yu get a older one that is cheap. trust me it will always let yu down when yu need it most. just like a rechargible drill.the gas ones are quiet and dont need chargeing and are always there when yu need them.i know sum guys have elec carts that are fine but around here finding sumone to work on them is a pain .i wud be more likely to choose a step thru atv and a sled of sum sort if yu cant lift a deer onto a 4 wheeler rack.

Went thru all this debate a few months ago. I was  thinking of a golf cart, a battery one would work but its about $800 bucks for new batteries. The courses in Hawaii use gas carts due to the hills, not sure about the dragging game thing though.  Side by sides go for 8,000 to 13,000 I just bought an older Touota 4x4 and rebuilt it underneath. I have 5 grand in it and it'll haul me and anything I can tie it to! and its street legal!
