1st attempt at fitting, "done"
« on: May 21, 2009, 04:50:35 PM »
Before I make a mess of things,
Got a barrel from one of the gents here on the forum.
I gotta try my first fit. So I’m going to give as much info as possible before   I ask ?’s.
I’ve read the FAQ’s alot, even printed a few pages, and Tim’s shim fit method should work for me.
It’s an extractor, and someone has already used Fred’s method to fill the gap in the lug. The seller has removed any/all previous shim stock and adhesive from the lug pivot. (this info was known prior to purchase).
A New cartridge case fit’s flush to the barrel face and a straight edge show’s no light as it’s rotated around that area. She’s flat!
  Here’s the question.?
An .005 mock shim locks the barrel face tight to the breech. So tight that a .001 feeler cannot be moved at all when the action is closed, is it possible or undesirable to have the barrel breech area too tight? Also, how can I tell if the latch is really properly engaged? It seem too lock-up proper when firmly closed. I guess I’m just asking for the sake of caution and safety before I actually apply the adhesive.
Oh, it’s a 7-08 standard Handi barrel, Thanks in advance.

The lockup seems right to me.  If the latch release lever is more than half way up when it is closed but is not all the way up, then the lock up is most likely good.  Larry

If the latch release has play in it when the bbl is locked up then your g2g :)

While I agree a bit more than half the thumb latch is a good thing...

Its NOT nearly as specific as I like and open to far too much interpretation. I like to smoke the latch shelf itself and check to see exactly what I have for engagement. Be sure you sharply snap the barrel closed each and every time. Remember your looking for consistencies here.

Good luck,

Well almost done, shim is in and clamped, it's just waiting for it to cure now.

Thanks cw,,I'm familar with smokeing techniques and it looks good. After re-reading the Barrel fit FAQ's I see Tim has it in there, but it's in the paragraph about "too tight". My trouble was too loose so, I didn't pay close enough attention too it.
::) I guess I'll have to read more carefully. There is SOOO much info there, a feller really has to look!
