Reloading for the H&R 30-06.

If I wanted to load down to make it a little more recoil friendly, what type of  reduced loads in a 10 twist have been successful for you folks?

What's the lightest bullet you got to shoot well out of a 10 twist?

I have a friend that may need to borrow a coyote gun, and would just as soon not kill him (my friend that is) with the stout business I routinely shoot out of my bolt gun.

I'd use Hodgdon youth data using their 60% rule with your bullet of choice, the 125gr NBT wouldn't be a bad choice, it works well in the 30-30.  ;)

FYI, over Father's day, I printed a 0.4" three shot group at 100 yards using 110 grain speer spires and 43g of H4895 out of the H&R 30-06.

That was with open sights (factory rear, and a Lyman Globe target sight on front)

(That was obviously the best group.  The other two were 1.0" and 1.2"   ;) )

Thanks again for pointing out the youth data.  Very mild on recoil.

Find a Ken Water's "Pet Loads" manual (collection of all his columns he wrote for Wolfe Pub's "Handloader Magazine"

In one of Water's articles for the '06, he lists a load he called the ".30-30/06."  Basically a 150 or 170grain bullet driven at .30-30 velocities. (@2400fps for a 150 grainer, and @2200 for a 170)

Or do what Quick suggested and visit the Hodgdon.com site.  Their published youth loads frequently use H4895.

Would the 60% theory work for IMR 4895 as well or is it limited to Hodgdon :-\n?

Or you could try some cast boolit selections. I use cast in all my off season target shooting forays,except for the .22 centerfires. Just as much fun at a lot cheaper rate.
That is important in these days of bullet and powder shortages.

Speer 110gr Varmiter and Speer 125gr TNTs shoot well in my 30-06s.  I use them out to 300 yards, beyond that I use Sierria 165gr Hollow Point Boat Tails, all in front of Hodgdon 760. 

The lighter the bullet the less recoil.

I wouldn't bet on it. They have similar burn rates, but they are not the same powder.

The only way to be sure is to call the company.

Hay, go all the way and work up some sub-sonic loads using Trail Boss.  Google "Subsonic loads for 30-06"  I think that is where I found them.  Anyway they are very mild, and I use them for small kids.  I have a friend that uses them for his suppressed gun.

I use 12 grs. blue dot behind a 110gr. short jacket. This gives me 1500 fps and great accuracy to 100 yards. The blue dot burns very clean, recoil is barely there and the report is also mild.

Look at using IMR 4198 to load 30-30 level loads for the 30-06. The smaller powder charges needed vs. 4895 gives some additional recoil reduction.(the mass of the powder all goes out the barrel as well). The Lee hand book lists a maximum charge of 4198 of 38 grains with a 150 grain bullet giving 2600 fps. I found 35 grains worked well and gave decent accuracy with Hornady 150 gr. SST and spire points. Ballistic tables show 1000+ ftlbs beyond 300 yrds with the SST. The kick seemed less than my son's Handi in .243.
I also have loaded 110 gr. fmj carbine bullets with 19 grain of SR 4759 which kicks like a 22lr and shoots 1.5 inch groups @100yds to the same point of aim as my full power hunting loads. Talk about a sweet practice load!

I have a reduced load that I like in .30-06.  Using a Hornady 110 spire point bullet with 26.0 gr. of AA 5744, my Handi barrel gives me 1931 fps. muzzle velocity and 22.66 standard deviation with nice accuracy.  I leave the scope on this barrel dialed in to zero for this load; I've got other .30-06's for other loads.  You can use AA 5744 for reduced loads in just about any bullet weight; also SR 4759 is similar and a wonderful powder for reduced jacketed bullet loads and cast bullet loads.
