A Big Edit to a
« on: May 22, 2009, 05:04:06 PM »
EDIT**EDIT to an earlier post regarding the 4 GB Micro SD Card.  Normally the map selection does not take much time, using the Map Tool in the Map Source software I select the maps I wanted on my 76Cx.  Frankly my selected area covered more of the U.S. and Canada then I will ever visit.

(1)The process involves having a Map Source product up on your computer.  (2) Use the map tool to select the maps you want.  In the case of the “X” models the maximum per card the units will recognize is 2025 maps. (3) My computers have a SD card reader slot on them.  I use the adapter that comes when purchasing an aftermarket micro SD card.  You do not save any time using the card reader for building the map set, but it saves considerable time after the program has built the mapset and it is being sent to your micro sd card.  The other route is sending the completed mapset to your gps via the USB-Mini usb cord.

Problem:  On March 29, 2009 Garmin release an update for the 60Cx, CSx, and the 76Cx, and CSx series of mapping gps.  This is version 3.90, and I updated my 76Cx with the update.

Change History

Changes made from version 3.70 to 3.90:
o   Added support for maps greater than 2 GB.

The wife and I purchased two 4 GB Micro SD cards.  The wife wanted one to store pictures on in a digital frame for her mother’s 85th birthday. The card reader on her computer would not recognize the 4GB card.  She resolved the problem by loading the pictures back on to her camera, and then transferring them to the digital frame.

When I tried the 4 GB Micro SD card in the adapter in my computer's card reader it would not recognize it at all.  I had already selected 2025 maps.  I connect my gps to the computer and selected the option to send the maps to the device (gps) with the gps attached it took over 3.5 hours to build the mapset that was going to be sent to the gps.  Once the map set was build I received an error message and my gps shut off.

The first thing I did was go to the Garmin web page and found that the Garmin “x” models will not recognize the Micros SDHC (high capacity cards)

I reinserted the standard 2GB micro SD card loaded with maps in the 76Cx and it works correctly.

When I read the information that the unit would recognize a card greater than 2 GB I did not see any qualifiers with the information.  When I get a chance I will call Garmin Support and ask them about this issue.
There is a learning process to effectively using a gps.  Do not throw your compass and map away!
