327 Federal

Does anyone have any experience with this round??  Was thinking about this as a small frame carry gun.

I shoot the 32 Mag in silhouette and would like to have a 327F in a Smith Airweight. The Ruger SP101 is to heavy for carry, I can't find a Smith in 327 F and if I could, I would have serious reservations about ammo since I can't find ammo in any caliber, anyway. If it catches on and I hope it will, and if the ammo is readily available, I' will likely get one.

Found one for you, Chucky. But even though the gun is attractive I would be worried about available ammo for it also....

That's not a gun  or an airweight for sale, it's an ad on a website. I've already seen it. Just try and buy it. The 32 H&R Mag never really caught on and ammo for it was and is impossible to find, even  before zero bama. Ruger made a single six in 32M and discontinued it, no real following. I'll admit I haven't shot a 327F; but, on paper with 6 rounds, I think it looks viable as a carry. It will put 20% more energy down range than a 5 shot Smith with the extra round. Probably better for a female or recoil sensitive male than a +P or ...

As stated, until I can buy ammo, I'll stick with my Smith +P and Glock 36.

It's really interesting that they compare the 327 to a lightweight +P 38 and one of the least most effective rounds out there.  You will kindly notice they did not compare the 327 to a 158 gn +P 38, or to a 200 gn 38 standard velocity/standard pressure round.  In fact, I believe they comapred the 327 to the same lightweight round they used to test the lightweight titanium revolvers when they first came out; simply not a valid comparison.  Sort of like the comparison between the 308 and the 30-06.  Well, I suppose that if you are going to compare something to something else and want your favorite to come out looking better you would want to make a unfavorable comparison........

If you wish to compare the 327 to something, compare it to a Tokarev in 7.62x25mm - near ballistic twins.  And most folk seem to forget that the Tokarev was the comm blocs standard sidearm for almost 30 years and is still sought after.  Heck, the commies only went to a 9mm (9mm Mak) when they downgraded the pistol to a defensive role.  And please, before anyone starts gushin' out about bad comparisons just remember that the Tok, as a bottle necked round, can be loaded with the same bullets as the 327 and probably just as fast.  And I also doubt the Tok would weigh any more than the Ruger.  Ah, choices, choices, choices.......well, at least the Tokarevs and ammo are available...........

The 327 seems kinda attractive but since I have a bunch of 38's & 357's & can handload all across the spectrum I don't see a need. Even if one is not a handloader the options are so much better in the 38/357 chambering.

I think it was a good experiment but not really needed. We already have too many calibers both in handgun and rifle. It's like Mikey said, comparing the .308 and 30-06, or the .270 and .280....there really is no feasable purpose. Same thing for the .327.

Six rounds instead of 5.
Great for recoil sensitive shooters i.e. ladies.
Beats the performance of all the 380's being carried.
Too many calibers??? Too many opinions??? That's it, eliminate some calibers and let Zero Bama choose.

No enough bullet weight for general purpose in my personal opinion. And if the .327 is anything like my 7.62x25 it is not nearly as controllable as a .38+P in any gun size. Mine is a full size large frame auto and the blast, noise etc is similar to a .357. Hardly the most controllable option for a recoil sensitive shooter. It's even designed differently due to the high pressure of the cartridge. (CZ 52) And how did the .380 end up in this discussion?

I'm not so sure about the less recoil than a .38 producing the same energy levels. I know the charge weight is a factor in the calculation of recoil energy, but come on! I'm kinda doubting there is less free recoil in guns of the same weight. Always glad to see the manufacturers introducing new stuff, but I'm afraid the .327 is going the way of the .32 Mag and the .45 GAP. Doubt that I'll be investing in a cartridge and revolver that has such a shaky future.

Ok, the forum has convinced me the 327F should be eliminated. Which caliber should we address next? Who is going to tell Ruger, Smith and Federal. Seems the 7x57 and 7-08 are duplications so both should be eliminated along with all those .308 based wildcats... No real need for anything other than .308.

Well, I like it. For all sorts of reasons, but if for nothing else than the versatility. The same reason I like and shoot the .32 H&R. For all those that say you cannot find it, I think you are not looking. With cowboy action all over the place and the advent of the internet it is just everywhere. Sure it is not in each Walmart but who cares. We sell a ton of it every month and keep increasing our load availability.

Then comes in its wildcat off shoots. Who could ask for a better T/C round, its long slim and rimmed, and built for med-high pressure. Just look at what the cooper round did long ago. now we have GOOD brass.

Pooh-pooh it if you want, and sure your reasons are valid, but I like the damn thing and that is my position.

Plus 1 for the 327,I have one in the Ruger Sp101.I love it,good round to play with.
I can load it from the 32S&W to the full house 327, ie; 77grain lead @ 475fps to a 115 grain fngc @north of XXXX (send me a Pm for the numbers) and 115grain factory JHP at a bunch.
It is a very versatile round.  just my2c      Doug

Everyone has their own reasons for what a certain gun/caliber choices. What some like some will dislike for whatever reason. What is a great cartridge for one may not be for another. Of course the industry will tell you that you "need" a new caliber but it's just marketing. Nobody has to tell the manufactures anything. The fact that they are not being bought is quite a message. If it was a hot sellar there would certainly be more models offered, at least I would think. Doesn't mean it's a dead, useless cartridge though. The .32-20 has made a decent comeback due to Cowboy shooting as has the .45 Colt and .44 Special.

I'm not ready to write the epitaph just yet.  I personally wouldn't necessarily feel undergunned with one.  Not my first choice as a duty gun of course but I think it would be no worse than the "formidable" .38 special.  That one was a stopper in it's heyday.  I'd really like to get a .327 in a lever or maybe a little-bitty bolt action.  A T/C G2 Carbine would be cool with a 16.25" barrel.  I wonder if it works in the G2?

I have had one about a year now . I like mine . Power seems ok . Weight and 3in. bbl. of the SP101 makes it hard to carry in a pocket all day. If Ruger or S&W either come out with a light weight I would get it as the extra round would be nice to have . When you consider the gun/ammo hit the market when guns and ammo both became in short supply in general it would be silly to cut it short until the market clears and it gets a fair chance.

Ah but they are selling, as a matter of fact they are selling so well dealers can't get them and when thay do they don't stay on the self long.  Charter, Tarus, and Rossi all make one as dose Freedom Arms and Ruger. At least two custom gun makers are building them that I've read about.  Ammo is hard to get right now but so is .38 special. that will change, Soon I hope.

I have a CZ 52 and I've shot a .327 oddly enuff there is a big diffrence in the muzzle jump and percieved recoil, I like the .327 much better, Much better bullet choice also.

Good post Reed1911!  As a gun nut myself, I have always wanted a 32 caliber for my collection.  When the 327F was introduced it caught my eye because of the versatility of the round plus your ability to run the existing 32 caliber rounds.

I have a single action Ruger being built in 327F with a 6" barrel.  Just to make things a little more unique I chose to build it on a 357 Blackhawk beater I found cheap.  My 327 will be an 8 shooter and should make a great gun for plinking and small game.

I for one hope that the ammo makers start ramping up production and quit being greedy.  I'm pretty much down to 22's.   >:(

I just bought a Ruger single six in 6.5" .32 H&R just to be converted to shoot .327 Mags. I think I love it and I don't even have the donor revolver yet. ;D

Not yet but when I get my handie rifle done I'll let you know how she shoots. ;D

BTW a couple fellers in the handie forum already have .327 rifles. 8)
