Uberti Cattleman Trigger Problems
« on: May 23, 2009, 03:45:23 PM »
I've had a Uberti Cattleman .357 Magnum for a year now and have fired maybe 700-800 rds.  Almost all being 38 Special.   It had a very light trigger pull from the start. The more I've used it the lighter it gets and is now what I would call a hair trigger and it is unsafe.  Just touching it will cause it to fire.  I have never mis-treated this gun in anyway.

Is there an easy fix, sure as replacing the trigger that I could do?   I hate to send it back to factory for repair due to time involved and shipping costs, etc.

What is the general concensus on Uberti products?  I have heard that quality of steel used is not as good as Ruger and others.  Kyfarmer

Good morning KyFarmer.  I'm sorry to hear about your trouble with your Uberti.  While the steel of the Uberti's of the '70's or '80's might be in question, all of the newer products from Uberti are very well made.  You have the possibility of two problems.  A trigger that might not have been properly hardened and is 'rounded off' on the back corner, or a bolt/trigger spring issue (or both).  I had a friend's gun with the same problem, and when we took it apart, the back corner of the trigger was 'rounded' off.  He said he HAD abused the gun so we went no further into if the trigger had not been properly hardened or not, and just replaced it.  The back of the trigger should be a sharp corner.  If it is not, you will have to either replace the trigger or file or stone it back to the proper shape.  Be warned you will have to keep the angle correct for it to work correctly.  And if you do return it to the proper shape, it will be slightly shorter and this will affect the timing of the gun.  A possibility is that your cylinder may not align with the loading gate when on half-cock.  I would just buy a new trigger and put it in, they are quite inexpensive.  A new trigger MAY also affect the timing of the gun but not likely it will.  While you are ordering the trigger, get another bolt/trigger spring and one of the new style hammer springs.  For the bolt/trigger, I would recommend one of the wire style (they never break, the flat style might)  and get a Wolff Hammer spring (just ask for the style with the slot in it).  You will love how that makes the gun feel.  With the new trigger and springs, she should give you years of pleasure.  44 Man

44 Man,  Many thanks for your good advice.  I will have an order into Brownell's tomorrow for a new trigger and I think I'll spring for a Wolf spring kit for it as well.
Are there any tricks of the trade or advice on installation that I should know about.  I've never been on the inside of a Colt clone but have done a little parts replacement etc. on Ruger and S&W.

Farmer, there are no tricks.  A Ruger is much more difficult to take apart than a Colt clone, you should have no problems.  In fact, you can do everything without taking it all down.  After you get the grip frame, main spring, and trigger guard off, you only have to pull the bolt/trigger spring and then you can remove the
trigger without any further dissasembly.  Glad you are replacing the trigger.  So many people try to make do or trade a nice gun off rather than invest in $20 or $30 to get it running right.  Then they miss the enjoyment of a nice handling and performing handgun.  44 Man

44 Man,   I received the new trigger and spring kit from Brownell's yesterday afternoon.  Those people are flat on the ball.   Love dealing with them.  It only took a few minutes to install them and I believe that my problem is solved.  Trigger is much improved and the spring kit really makes for a nice action.  Will try it out soon.

Many thanks for your helpful advice.   kyfarmer
