Benjamin 312 from 1961 that needs repair, where at?
« on: September 17, 2003, 11:46:24 AM »
I have a Benjamin model 312 that was made in 1961, according to the serial number.  I can pump it up and for some reason it has more power with two pumps than with 10 pumps.  Are my seals shot and the air pressure is too much?  I'm getting a little wind in my face when I pull the trigger, I'd assume this is bleeding off of a bad seal and not putting that air behind my pellet.  Where does one go to have work like this done, or can it be repaired at all?  Also, what did that model put out for FPS with a .22 caliber pellet when it was new?  I use to shoot rabbits and squirrels with it out to 30 yds. or so, but alas, no more.

If its holding air it isn't the seals. The hammer spring has weakened and isn't capable of opening the valve far enough any more. Try Precision Pellet for a replacement.

If you are getting a little puff of air when you fire it the bolt may need to be adjusted. On the left side of the breech theres a small plate with with 2 screws and a right angle that locks the bolt in place.  It probably needs to be moved forward a bit to seal the bolt.
The 312 should make just over 12 ft/lbs, or launch a 14.3gr pellet at somewhat over 600 fps. Mine will hit low 620s.

Dave:
What experience have you had with the airgunshop?
I have a 312 but no serial number. Also the barrel is not anchored to the top of the pump at the muzzle.  It doesn't look as if it ever was.  Is this normal?

I've had guns resealed by Rick at Precision Pellet and gotten a fair amount of parts too. Never had a problem, he seems like a decent guy, and he knows his stuff.
The entire length of the barrel should be soldered to the pump tube, and there should be a sight block permanently attached about an inch from the muzzle. If its just the very end in front of the sight, that shouldn't be a big problem. It may have been made that way, though I've never seen one like that. Mine is an early model, the barrel is soldered end to end.

Thank you, I will give him a call before sending the gun.
I don't seem able to disassemble this completely without risking breaking something.
