We test-fired the monster today, worked-photos should be along by tomorrow.

This was our inspiration, and you might say ours draws on a bit of "artistic license."  We didn't just want to copy the Russian item, so we improved on it, of course.

This is the best I could do out of 4 tries.....   :-[

every time it went off I jerked the camera trying to catch it.....

it makes an odd sound sort of like paper ripping.......

I live in a development not enough activity (fireworks) around here

to keep going....... we got fireworks police patrolling looking for violators........

Heck of a way to celebrate our countries freedom........

It seemed that I could not time hitting the button with the suddenness of it firing and between being surprised by it going off

and trying to quickly capture it, that photo was the best I could do.  So no ..... no flying cannons......

The video of it shooting should be out pretty soon, will post a link here tomorrow or so.

This is the 50 Caliber Rotary Air Cooled Inertial Self-Ejecting Pyrotechnically Discharged Machine Gun, or .50 RACISEPDMG for short.  I wanted to build something with items onhand as much as possible, so I had everything you see there onhand except the pipe nipples-for the non-hardware-initiated, those are the short sections of pipe, 5" long in this case.

Here's the monster IN ACTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Or maybe you could call it stop-action.  Anyway this is the first time we tried it-it worked better after some adjustments in gun and ammo.

The firecrackers are contained in .50 MG expended cases with necks cut back slightly to fit in the "chamber" (3/4 in. beam clamps we happened to have onhand.)  The 3/4 in. beam clamps just happen to have two holes in the flanges which perfectly accommodate a .50 MG cartridge case.  The hole on one end is threaded, which although not a pipe thread, by chance has threads spaced so it will grab the pipe thread on the 1/4 in. pipe nipple as if it was made to fit.

The video of firing isn't too dramatic so I plan to make another one using a little black powder to "augment" the firecracker discharge with more flame and smoke.

Please tell me that the can of goex sitting near that gun and tourch is just to show the size of the contraption and that it does not have powder in it.

Correct, empty can for scale.  This board kind of established that convention some time back, so I follow it when I have an empty can handy.

Since the flame from the igniter is pretty long, how about raising the axle so the discharge is not right next to the base of the flame?

Unfortunately I let work interfere with my cannon building time and I did not get it done in time, however I thot I would post what I have as of the morning of the fourth.
It is a breechloader with a groove for the fuse. I put steel axels on it to keep the weight up, although I don't think recoil will be a problem.

The barrel:

Breech open to load:

Breech closed to fire:

Surely it will be done by next fourth :)

MikeRC , can I ask you what it's made of and how you made that barrel ?

Ours has style too of course, but more of a Rube Goldberg style.

Don't get me wrong on this, I like everyones (how's that for diplomacy) design, and I agree with Cat, that Mike's has class, but I think that Cannonmn's design stands a chance of winning just like it is, or of perhaps winning hands down, if he adds a strange animal (maybe a Tasmanian devil, or how about a pygmy pony) that's walking on a treadmill, which in turn is connected to a series of gears & shafts that spin the wheel. ;)
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Cat,
The barrel is brass shafting, scrap, probably 360 but I don't actually know. I redrew one of the barrels off the CD that the navy sells of the constitution, and scaled it down. The taper was roughed out in steps then filed smooth in the lathe. The mouldings were cut freehand using a bit with a round, 1/64, radiused end. A bar is put in the lathe's tool holder and positioned close to the work then the cutting bit is rested on the bar, held in the hand, and the brass is cut freehand as you would do in a wood lathe with a gouge. The "Breech" was done the same way including the cascabel. As long as the rest stays close to the work, 1/8 to 1/32, it seems very safe.

The muzzle:

Moulding detail and breech:

The tool I used"

I milled two slots in the back of the barrel and silversoldered the hinge parts, then milled a slot in the breech and silversoldered the center hinge in. There will be a stop bolted to the rear axel that the hinge will close against when the barrel is down, then once it is fired it the barrel will tip up and the breech will open to reload.

Detail of the moulding:

Just as a note, I don't expect my cannon to be an "official" entry in the contest, it isn't done and won't really work until the carriage is finished. I did however want to participate, I just didn't have the time to get it done.

Thx
