Breechplug Interchangability???

From what I read, some BP's are better than others from point of view on blowback, & ignition flame.  Has anyone done any switching around to see if better designed plugs woud fit on different firearms?  Personally, I bought a new CVA and I understand they can be dirtier & not as reliable for ignition.

Are you looking into shooting Blackhorn 209?  If thats the case, Knight and i think nef have hangfire issues with this powder.

  Yes.  New CVA wolf 209 magnum.  I want to start by trying powerbelts/BH 209/ and cleanest, most reliable 209 primer (Rem SST)?  This is new technology for me as I am upgrading from 777/ musket caps/ & heavy conicals.

Not aware of any issues with new CVA's and BH209.  I shoot BH209 out of a T/C Omega and Knight Elite (with the non full plastic jacket breech plug).  So far, the cleanest 209 primer has been the Rem STS.

Some guys recommend the Fed209A's or CCI209M for cold weather use... as they are hotter.  But I found them to leave a a lot of primer fouling.  I'll probably continue to use the Rem's at the range and switch to the Feds for hunting.

you will have no problems with the wolf and bh209.  Now the sts primer i think is a muzzleloader primer ( not as hot)

CCI 209m  or Federal 209  seems to be the most reliable primers for bh209.

What grain powerbelts do you plan on shooting?

I plan to start out with either the 295 or 348 grain aerotip copper,  based on what I have learned about the lighter bullets fragmenting with high velocity charges.  Since I don't plan on shooting beyond 75 yards, I plan on keeping my charge of powder under 100 grains.  I hope the remington primers will be hot enough to be reliable  because I have read that  the hotter  CCI & federal primers can cause considerable dirty blowback.  I don't believe I will be hunting in cold enough weather for the cooler ignition associated with Rem. STS primers  to be a problem.  Please inform me if you think my logic is flawed.

295-348 is a great place to start. I'd start with a 60 grain charge with the 295s and a 70gr charge with the 348's.

I did stop sending these out but, If you find that the powerbelts shoot good in your rifle, PM me and i'll send you some inserts for the bullets that will allow the use of more powder.


I know for a fact that with 80gr bh209 and the 348gr Aerotip Powerbelt, it will put an elk down easily!

  Thanks Bigblock,  I'll do that, but I'm not sure I understand.  Do you think the inserts would be necessary for heavier charges?

Yes. the 245-295 will easily come apart with close distance shots. Its there to stop over expansion/fragmentation.  With the insert i made im only losing an average of 3 grains in the 245 and 295gr at ranges from 20 yards out to 100 yards. I'll be shooting some regular 245gr Aerotips today and will show you what they look like when i pull them out of my 100 yard sand box. Then i'll show you what one looks like with my insert.

the heavier the better. I like the copper coated PB's as the pure lead PB's seem to build up lead in the bore pretty quickly.
