Ed, Ironglow spotted me ranting on another thread about the need for a rifle such as the one you had built. I like my Handis, but they are plain bigger than they need to be for woodsloafing and the little cartridges that are so nice for the suburbanized places that most of us live these days.

I have my eye open for one of the baby rolling blocks. I could live with the .357 chambering but would really like to rebarrel to .256 or .256 Max.

My screen name tells it all. The H&R Ultra in 20ga single shot and the ML is a flint CVA Plainsmen. For hunting

My other gun is a AR-15  for fun

Leftoverdj;
Wow! I really have admired that little .256 Win round for many years, but I am afraid that we may get into a real bind in a few years with this round becoming almost impossible to find....
On second thought, I guess this could eventually, after my demise, be true also of the .32 mag....what's a man to do?

I hunted for years with bolt guns, but am in search of a lightweight singleshot.  As I get older, the hills get steeper and the drags get tougher.

Carried a Ruger #1 last Fall but found it heavy compared to my .308 Rem Model 7.  Currently playing with an older H&R Model 58 Topper in 30-30.

This one's a bit outside my budget:

I have been using singleshots for the last 10yrs. in the 45-70. When I shot my first deer with it, I decided that was all I needed as long as I did my part.    :P

It's been a while since I read this thread.  Prince of Wales, I envy you your guns.  24" Marlin 336?  I am lusting already!  I just sold the NEF so I could pick up a used Marlin .30-30 in K-town.  It's in pretty decent shape but has the 20" barrel.  I've been wondering about rebarreling it before sending it off for a teflon finish.

The .35 Whelen would be good for Etolin and the elk if you drew a permit!

Take care,

I've drug my Krieghoff Drilling in cal. 8x57jrs all over Alaska. (and other places)  I've taken everything from moose, bear, caribou, to numerous deer with it.  It's also a great pheasant, rabbit and grouse gun too.

It's one gun that does everything i need, and gets used the most of any gun i own.

I generally prefer my Springfield Krag bolt gun for Whitetails.
But when I'm cruising the brush, nothing is better then my Trapdoor Springfield Carbine.

Hey Drilling Man, that's a beauty! But how do you hunt with all the people following you around, looking at your drilling?

Picked up another single shot rifle this weekend. Hope to make it a small game rifle. It's a Martini Cadet, chambered for .32-20. The rest of the gun is as issued, with full length military stock, and the sweetest looking tiger striped wood I've ever seen on a military weapon.

Hey Marlinman,

The picture i posted isn't of "my" drilling, as i don't have one of "mine" scanned in my puter yet.  Actually the one pictured is a bit "fancier", but i like mine better.  :>)

My drilling has color case hardened metal, choke tubes, an english walnut stock, claw mounted scope, insert bbls, and many other options that make it a better hunting gun.  I bought my drilling to use as a "hunting gun", and it's one of the best purchases i've ever made.

The pict. is of "one" of the two bucks i took with it this last fall.

Just curious if anyone else hunts with their singleshots, or do you just shoot targets?
I will be hunting deer with my 1880's Marlin Ballard #5 Pacific, in .45-70, with heavy barrel, and tang sight. I will also be bringing along my Remington Hepburn in .45-70, with full length scope, as a second rifle.
Hope to harvest a Mulie with one of these old girls. Took a decent buck with my #4 Ballard Perfection last year, and it did a good job.

I am envious of you. I have always wanted a Hepburn in 38-55 or 45-70.
So far I have not got to hunt with my Low-wall. I am rebarreling it and
restocking it first.

Hi KSR,
Yes, I too waited and looked at hepburns for many years! I was fortunate to have a friend who knew I was looking, and steered me into a "project gun" he found. Mine is a Hepburn original action, with Badger barrel, and custom stocks. The gun was only a barreled action when I bought it, with two pieces of deluxe stock blanks for forearm and buttstock. I cut the barrel down from 36" and fitted the stocks, after sending them to Dave Crossno in Oklahoma for 90% inletting.
It took a lot of waiting, and more time to finish it, but I'm happy to have a "real" Hepburn, even if it's not original.

I now hunt exclusivelly with single shots.  During the winter I carry a NEF 30-06 Handi on my snowmachine for wolves.  During the summer I carry a .35 Whelen on the 4 wheeler, or in my boat for bear problems.  During the fall Moose and Caribou season I carry my TCR with .338 Win Mag barrel.  Not for Moose or Caribou so much as for the run in we seem to always have with Grizzlies.  The .35 Whelen is totally adiquite for Moose, and the 30-06 is great for Caribou, but those bears take a lot of killing.   In 35 years of hunting only once have I needed a second shot, and that could have been easily made with a single shot.  So why carry a heavier gun?

Got another single shot to use for small game hunting. It's a .22 short, with #1 weight barrel, which is pretty light, but in .22 looks very heavy.
It's an original 1885 Win Low Wall, and it letters with all the features. Hope to get out tommorrow and see how she shoots!

Thanks Jack! It's a 1902 vintage, thickside Low Wall, with set trigger, and some very fine wood. I hope it shoots half as good as it looks. The bore is like new, so it should.

Thank you also PoW! I'll have to wait until next week to find out. Too many projects popping up with our great turn of weather here. Rather be shooting, but....
This Stevens was part of the deal also. Had to take both of them to get the Winchester.

Mismatched forearm, but other than that, it's in great shape. I'll refinish the forearm wood, and darken it a bit to match the buttstock.

You mentioned you were looking for a lightweight singleshot.  Look at the handi's in synthetic stocks.  deer calibers from .243  up to 30-06 or the big bores up to 45-70.  Stay away from the ultralight models as they seem to have more than their share of accuracy problems.

Good luck.

Marlinman that Stephens is nothing to sneeze at either. I used to have some of that red filler that would work perfectly on the forend. I`d be proud to have either one of those rifles in my collection. Best of luck. POW

PoW,
Thanks again! Any idea where to get that red filler? The forearm doesn't have the grain that the buttstock has, but hopefully with darkening, and color matching, it will look acceptable.

Marlinman seems as if forarms seldom have the figure that the butt stocks have. I got the red filler from a gunsmith when I lived in Longview Wa. Don`t know where he got it though. Brownells would be a possability.
I have the same thing an a Savage 99. Nice piece of walnut on the butt and lighter colored forend. Been trying to figure what to do with it. Tried a dark stain but for some reason it did`nt take well. Best of luck. POW

Marlinman I love your Hepburn, it turned out really nice. I just bought
a Winchester 1885 highwall in 45/70. It is one of the limited editions
that they did this year. I think they only made 500 of them.
I still am going to have to find a Hepburn thou, I have aways loved
the look of them over all the others.
So far I have an origonal low wall, a Ruger no1, and the new Winchester.
I guess I need to get busy looking for some other single shots.LOL

By the way where did you get the brass scope and what power is it?
A 3 or 4 power?
