How many of you guys actually hunt with you

KSR,
I got the brass scope at a gun show at the Reno Hilton. It was about $60-$70 if I remember right. It had some crudely installed crosshairs, which I replaced. I cleaned it up, and changed the lenses out. It was 4x, but it is now 8x. It started life as one of the Navy Arms scopes, which I believe were Tascos. I didn't like the crude cast heavy octagon mounts and rings, so I slimmed them down in the lathe and mill, and made them clean, smooth, and lightweight! A major improvement over the way they came!
I'm still debating whether to run my dovetail cutter across the barrel, in order to facilitate mounting a front globe sight, and vernier tang sight someday? Just kinda hate to make a dovetail slot, if I leave the scope on it.

45-70 Ruger #1. Only big game we have in NY is whitetail and black bear. The 45-70 works well for either.

Hunting with single shots
« Reply #94 on: November 19, 2004, 06:21:04 AM »
My first rifle was a Geco .22 single shot.  That's the little one with "Karibiner" on the barrel, and nothing else.  I had to be careful opening the bolt, cause the ejector would fly out if I opened the bolt too fast.  I started my son out with it years ago, and now it's waiting for the next generation.
I still have my father's Winchester 67 .22 s/l/lr, and still shoot groundhogs with it, as well as his Ithaca 49 .22 Mag.
My Buffalo Classic is great for groundhogs!  These old eyes are still good enough to see a whistle-pig in a field, and to get a good sight picture.
I rely on a NEF in .30-06 with a 1.5 x 6 scope.  It's a proven meat gun, consistent and accurate.

Yes, I shoot my Ruger # 1B at things other than paper. . .deer, coyote and ground hog. Hope someday to venture out West to go after an elk and maybe a pronghorn.

My Ruger # 1B is chambered .257 Roberts and I hand load ALL my rounds.

I find it fascinating that anyone would post a question like this. Single shot people don’t even think about a second shot most of the time. We make the first shot right. There is no handicap with a single shot gun. I have not failed to down an animal in the last 18 years.

Some people just need to practice more and learn how to shoot a straight shot and not rely on a second, third, or the last shot in the magazine to take game.

Mickincolo,
Since I posted this "fascinating" question, I suppose I should explain. Sure a lot of people buy newer single shots especially for hunting. Many folks also buy them for competition, such as long range or BPCR, and never hunt with them. Another group collects early single shots, with no intention of even shooting them at paper, let alone hunting with them.
This last group was what prompted me to post this question originally. All my single shots are original old collectable guns, such as Ballards, Rolling Blocks, Stevens, Winchesters, etc. I shoot all mine, and hunt with the bigger bore singles.
After being asked the same question over and over while shooting my old singles at the range, I was curious if others strictly shot at paper, collected, or actually hunted with their single shots. Many of my single shot collecting friends are surprised that I shoot mine, and aghast at the thought of taking expensive old rifles out to hunt with! On the other hand, I can't imagine not using them to hunt. Heck they've been hunted with for years before I owned them!

marlinman93,

Just wanted to let you know that on Friday afternoon(11-26-04), I took a nice, fat, spike whitetail with my Browning 1885 Single Shot.  My rifle is chambered to the 7mm Rem Mag and was loaded with a Nosler 140g Ballistic Tip which exited the 28" barrel at 3,200 fps.

As measured by my laser range finder, the deer was standing in my cornfield, some 98 yds. away. I surely didn't need all that horsepower, but it was there. The bullet went in just behind the left shoulder and exited just behind the right. Death must have been instantaneous, as he never got up, again!

Didn't notice any excessive meat damage!

Yeah, I hunt with my single shots!

Nice shooting Buffalogun! Always enjoy hearing real hunting stories from real hunters. I guess the 7Mag wasn't taxed to heavily to take a nice buck at 100 yds, but it's better to have a bit too much gun, than not enough!
 Congratulations!

Hi Mick,
I could tell from some of the replies, that it was long overdue for me to explain the question.
 Thanks for the prompting!

If you can't do it with one shot what makes you think a magazine full is gonna do it.
I hunt with nothing but single shots.
Don't really have  a use for a repeating gun for hunting.

This is just my opinion!

I harvested this "meat buck" the other day with my Krieghoff drilling in 8x57jrs, at just under 150 yards.  My "one load fits all" in this gun is a  200 grain Nosler partition at 2,550fps..  This load has worked for me on everything from coyotes to moose, and i have no plans to change it!!

What else would you use, if you're a purist?  Started with the .53 Hawken that I built from a kit back in '76 and have used nothing since that didn't shoot the holy black.  The  first britchloader that I used was a 1902 Remington Rolling Block that I built with a Numrich bull barrel, then used the #3 sporter that Shiloh built when they began selling directly to dealers.....cost at that time was $556 with a six month wait....times change don't they?  Lately, I've been using a .43 Spanish in a nice old Peabody that someone "sporterized" by shortening the forearm and chopping the barrel, so no worries in improving it by squaring up the muzzle and adding a Williams ghostring on the rear and an easily seen Marble's white bead on the front....knocks 'em cockstiff.
