Shotshell reloading for trap.
« on: May 26, 2009, 07:40:31 AM »
Are any of you guys reloading shotshells for trap and is it getting back to where it is econmical to do so. For a while there I was told that it was costing more to reload that to buy shells. I have a reloader that was my uncle's from when he was younger and would really like to use it if it will save me a little money. It is a MEC 750.  I have a lot of AA hulls and there are a lot of wads that they had left over, the wads are probably 20 years old though.  They have been kept in a box in my grandparents basement, dry and still in their plastic bag, you think they are still good.  Thanks for your help.

To answer you question.
I just stopped shooting trap on a regular basis and I found it cheaper to buy the 100 round pack at Wally world than to buy shot and reload.  It was the shot that was expensive, the powder and primers were not outragous.
If the hulls are kept clean and dry I don't see why not.
As for the wads.... Just make sure you have a recipe for those wads.
you may know that there are certain combos you do and do not do.
If you are going to set up the reloader.  i would suggest you go buy a reloading manual for shot shells first.  They are around $25.
You will need to head for the Win hull section and then look up what load (1oz, 1 1/8oz) and what primer you are going to use.
Personally I pick win 209 as they fit in the hull.  I once had some other brand that kept falling out of the fed hulls I was using in a 20 ga when I was a kid.  Dad and I were hunting and he noticed that I was loading the shell and then reaching in my pocket for something else and sticking it in the hull and then closing my SBS.  It was the primer and when I explained what I was doing and showed him the back of the shells open.... Well no more bargin primers.
As far as powder goes...I like Green and Blue dot for my loads.  the Green will give me everything I need for target out of my 20, 12, and 10, and the blue works well for the hot hunting and pot shooting loads, they also double as my pistol powders.
With the shot size.  It will not matter the load for 9, 8, or 7.5.  Only the speed will matter for the small shot.  1200 FPS is good.  All three will break birds from the 27 yard line even with 1 OZ.
Hope this was helpful.

+1 on mcwoodduck's post.
Plus, take one of the wads and pinch the petals over toward the center, if they break off they have become too brittle.

I still reload for trap shooting. With my latest purchase (May 09) of powder, shot, wads, and primers I can still reload 1 1/8oz loads for $3.21/box and 1 oz loads for $3.16/box. So far this year I've reloaded 4,400 rounds. I really like the ability to reload shells to my style of shooting. I like 1oz of 8 1/2's w/ a  windjammer wad at 1180 fps for my 16 yds  targets and 1 1/8oz of 8's with a figure 8 wad @ 1200 fps for my handicaps. I combine the two for my doubles.
Reloading is a hobby for me and I enjoy the time sitting at the bench making things that I feel are as good or better than the store bought stuff

I would recomand the Layman Shot Shell manual. It has a lot of very usfull info other than just loading data. When I was shooting alot of leages I always shot 7/8 oz. loads from the 16 yrd. line and 1 oz. for handy cap. I also felt that 1,175 fps. was as fast as you need to load, you can`t tell the difference in the speed or with your leed, and they seem to patteren alittle better.

What is the current price of chilled shot per 10lb bag in your area now? I for one would like to get back into shot shell reloading after a 3 year absence due to price increases.

Never seen it in a 10#, most shot is sold in 25# bags. A few weeks ago I bought Remington STS shot for $24.95 and West Coast Magnum for $23.95

For your own safety, check your powder drops with a scale.
