I had a realization today...
« on: May 26, 2009, 10:44:36 AM »
Why isn't there any belted magnum Handi rifles?  No 7mm Rem mag, no .300 Win Mag, and no .338 Win Mags.  Why is that?  Is there an issue with the belted cartridges or the pressures they produce?  I've recently read about the .35 HCR, which is a 338 necked up to .358, and thought why not rechamber a 357 mag or 35 Whelen Handi.  There's no bolt, is there something I'm missing here?

Thanks,

If you look at the action the Handi is really a single shot shotgun. through the technology of modern metallurgy they have been able to allow it to handle more pressure and stress. There are limits though.

The dreaded " frame stretch" plus the pressure, size of the cartridge case head, and on and on.If the powers that be thought it would work and be financially viable they would have done so, by now.    Doug

It was in the planing and pics were in last years catalog of 7mmMag and 300 WinMag Handi's.
But I guess with Reminton buying them out at around the same time-ish, that R&D need to be done buy Remington to see if it's worthwhile to them, at least thats what it seem to me.

It wasn't Remington that failed to come thru, it was lack of distributor interest that killed the Handi-Mags, H&R didn't received enough pre-orders for them to justify spending the $20k for testing of the new frame for them. It's the same thing that killed the 35 Remington Handi, just not enough interested distributors.  :-\

Thanks everyone,
I see now why they don't have them.  Tim, I saw those Handi-Mags on their website only one time.  I have always wondered what happened with that whole venture, now I know.  Are there any safety issues with rechambering to a Magnum?

Thanks,

The only mag chamberings that can be used on an SB2 frame are pistol chamberings such as the 500S&W, magnum rifle chamberings have too much case head thrust for the frame.

You don't need a magnum..........you need a Handi .45-70........It'll do what you need to do past 300 yards.......If you take the TIME TO LEARN IT.

I do not contest the fact that I don't need a magnum.  I wanted one. My original thought was to have either a 357mag or 35 Whelen rechambered to the .35HCR(35/338).  I will just wait like everyone else.  I do like the idea of a 45-70 too.  I keep watching the classifieds for the right one, someday I will find it.

Thanks, Dinny

And if you were ever interested in a 7mmMag you don't really need one if you have a 280 with the added velocity gain in a 26" barrel.

Yeah, I've never been overly interested in the 7mm Mag myself.  No need.

In the past I've owned bolt guns in 375H&H and 458 Winchester, plus a H&R 10ga slug gun. My shoulders cannot take any more of those types of guns and I'm quite happy with my 223 Handi.  ;D

If I was going to pick a big game Handi in a non-standard caliber I'd have made a Handi in 7mm Ackley Improved. I owned a bolt gun in that years ago and it worked on everything from moose to groundhogs.

I own both a TCR with 7MM Mag and .338 Win Mag barrels, and an Encore with .300 WM and 30-06 barrels for it.  I love the .338, and carry it often.  The only thing I do not like about it is that it does not have ejectors.  Many times when I would prefer to carry the .338, I carry the 30-06 Handi or a 45-70 Handi.  Simply because the TCs do not have ejectors and I might need a second shot.

Would love to see a Handi in .338 Win Mag.

That definitely makes 2 of us.  The 338 Win Mag would be a beast in the Handi configuration. I don't see why they can't chamber for the .338 Federal at least.

Considering Remington only offers a .338 anything in the XCR, the 338 Rem Ultra Mag and 338 Win Mag, and they don't make 338 Federal ammo, don't count on an H&R 338 Federal anytime soon.  :-\

And I have noticed Remington likes to "lean" into their own comercial calibers... as much as possible.
Though I agree a 338 Federal would be cool in a Handi.

Crazier things have happened before.  Remember that Remington has chambered rifles in 270 WSM and now recently in 257 Weatherby. I would bet that they are more interested in what sells than whether it's theirs or not.  Maybe Wayne York could rebore and rechamber a .223 to a .338 Federal.  If possible, I would never argue that it would certainly be faster than waiting on Remington to do it.

Welcome to Our World Dinny ;)

I have thought about the 338 Fed quite a bit myself , 338-06 A-Square is an appealing cartridge too ... But of course the only one i was wanting as much as the Whelen was the 9.3x74r and Wayne doesnt work with that calibers bullet diameter , so not everything can be had even going custom .

Wayne did a 338-06 A-Square from a 26" 25-06 barrel for me about 4yrs ago, it was the first I had done, it pushes 180gr Accubonds over 3000fps, on my list of loads to try is the new 160gr TTSX at around 3300fps!!!  ;D

If'n ya want a 338 something that may be a realized, hope for the 338 MX, Marlin is tooled up to make the barrels, it shouldn't be too far fetched to ask for it.  ;)
