The fix!
I got an early start this morning, fired up the computer so that I could get the Garmin Support number.

I made some coffee, poured a cup and went back to my computer. Before making the call I wrote down some note regarding the problems my unit was having since downloading the v3.90 upgrade, with power failure, not recognizing NiMH batteries that it would operate off the USB cord from the computer.
I opened up the back of the gps and copied down the serial number of my unit.
I was comfortable in front of my computer. I expected to receive a message and time when connecting with Garmin advising me on how long I would have to wait. I worked my way through 2 or 3 options. I will not explain them because they are subject to change. Once I got the message I was at the correct location and there would be an eight minute wait. No big deal I played on my computer and sipped coffee.
In 3 or 4 minutes a service representative came online. He was very polite, and helpful. I explained the problems I was having and I told him the unit was out of warranty. He asked if I had registered the unit, and I replied in the affirmative. He asked me for my sign in name or the unit serial number. I gave him the serial number and he confirmed my name.
Initially he said that the only change that 3.90 had made was allowing the software to recognize a card larger than 2 GB.
I reminded him that Garmin was in the habit of not listing “all” the changes involved in an update.
He agreed.
He said that if I wanted he could provide me with a link to access a site to get the v3.70 rollback.
I provided him with my e-mail address so he could send me the link.
He asked me if I had any more questions and I told him the v3.90 update was described as allowing the units to recognize Micro SD Cards larger than 2 GB.
He agreed.
I told him that I had loaded a 4 GB Micro SDHC card with over 3 GB of maps. (HC=High Capacity)
I found the card would not function with 3 GB of data on board. I also noted that I did some research and could not find any Micro SD cards over 2 GB that were “not” High Capacity.”
He agreed with my statement regarding cards greater the 2GB, and said the engineers said they would work. The kicker was the cards would work if you did exceed 2 GB of data.
Huh!
I open my e-mail and I had a message from Garmin with the link and some directions. At this point I am not publishing the link to the roll back because some might use it on a model that it is not compatible with resulting in their gps locking up. If you have a problem call Garmin and have them provide you with the link. Your call adds to count, and pressure the engineers to come up with a fix.
The roll back from 3.90 to 3.70 does not fix the card problem, but it got my 76Cx working again. I see not benefit current with the larger card. There could be something in the works that may change my mind.
