Brad I think you were asking about my picture. The far left bullet is a 550 grain hard cast bullet from Jae Bok Young (he calls it a Crater-2 see the FAQ's for his web page).  The other flat nosed one is a 420 grain hard caste bullet from Mr. Young as well (he calls that one the Crater Lite-2). The one with the more tapered profile is a 410 grain Saeco 21AGC from Western Bullets (www.westernbullets.com).  THe 21A is my personal favorite all purpose one in the bunch.  HAs very good ballistics and shoots quite well out of my BC.  Also is heavy enough to bring down a biggun but still light enough to load up to 1900 fps without kicking so bad you think real hard about actually shooting it.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

I have handi-rifles from 223 up to 500 mag, if I had to pick just one as a all around hunting and shooting rifle it would be the 308, its kind of the middle of the road rifle for me.

i'd say the caliber choice would first depend on whether you reload or not.....based on what i'm reading here and the little bit I know about the handi's personally i'd choose a barrel i don't even own(yet) and that would be the 30-30...with a cast bullet you could do anything a 357 mag can do and it will shoot very comfortably at that level, and you can also load up with a good pointed 150 grainer and full power load and be good to 200-250 yds on deer, and that's farther than most folks should be shooting at game. Second choice would be 357 reamed to max

My first choice would be my wayne york 375 winchester followed by 38-55.  I reload and lead bullets are my fav....

But if reloading didn't enter into it...357 max or 12 guage.

I may be going against the grain here, but I really like my .45LC Handi ALOT!!!  I probably won't be shooting too many p-dogs with it, but I have yet to shoot one with anything at all. After handloading the 250gr Barnes XPB to 1680fps and the 360gr CPB to 1100fps, I think it's adequate for some large game within a reasonable range. IMHO, it's just as versatile as the 44 mag.

The .45 Colt and the .44 mag are very good in a rifle or a revolver! ;D What one will do the other will match...
The .44 mag wins if we use factory ammo because of wide availability of hunting loads.
If we are handloading, the .45 Colt wins because it can push heavy bullets faster at a lower pressure than the .44 mag.
My vote goes to the .45 Colt.

Hawk,
I primarily handload myself, only using factory loads for a comparison and for collecting brass. I have learned alot from the .45LC and it's capabilities.  It's almost a shame that it is usually downloaded for the older guns out there that won't hold up to the higher pressures of modern loads.  I am a big fan of Buffalo Bore ammo and rarely consider them as "factory." The slow loads are fun though just not for hunting.

Hi Dinny,  I handload and use the 300gr. Speer with H110...  My load (Large Ruger Safe) is very much the same vel. as the GREAT Buffalo Bore load. ;)

Here's a real thumper I have for my 45 21gr LilGun 360gr Lazer cast. It mirrors Buffalo Bores .454 almost 1500fps. It is right on the edge of sanity for Classic Carbine safety. I'd like to hit a PD with one of those matter of fact I'd like to hit anything with one of those I used for deer last yr in WI but never got a shot. kurt

I don't recall my load, but I do use H Lil Gun with a 360gr Cast Performance bullet.  1100fps is accurate and plently powerful for me. I would suspect that recoil is lighter too.

I call it my Lil 20gauge in a 45 case. You betch ya on the recoil I sure would like to shoot a deer with it though and hopfully recover the slug just to see if it splats at that speed if I get any range time this summer I really want to work some light 200 -250gr bullets at high speed.Kurt

I shot through the front shoulders of a large bodied deer this last year hoping to find the slug. NO WAY! Even at 1100fps it penetrates forever. You probably would need a backhoe to find that bullet.  You might get lucky and position the deer in front of a tree. Good luck!

Snakeman,

I never get tired of this topic. Now, are you asking to pick between calibers chambered in Handi rifles?

I don't have any experience with handi rifles. But overall, I'd say its a tossup between 30. 30, 357 magnum, and 20 gauge. Gotta put the .22 in there, because you can carry more.

But I say go with .357. You can take deer, and smaller critters like quail with 38 Special.

Anyone else agree?

I too prefer my 45's over my 44's.  Just cause I like being a little different. ::)  Always like to show the 44 mag fanatics what a 45 will do, just as much as theirs and then a little more.  Been trying to think about "just one" and have changed my mind several time. ???  Now I gotta headache and still don't know. :-\  Gimme a couple more months and MAYBE I'll have an answer. :D  DP

If you could own only one of these fine rifles to do everything with, what would it be. What cal.? and why?

snakeman
Hmmmmm.... well... lots of y'all DO have more than one Handi.  I don't.  I could only have one for now.  So I voted, after doin' my research, on the caliber I'd wanted for years and had never had a rifle in:

I have three 45-70's. One I shoot BPCR plus I have a 45-75 that I shoot BPCR. The two 45-70's that I shoot with smokeless are not Handies(sorry, Marlins)......but we are talkin' cartridges right?.......One 45-70 is scoped and is easily a 125 yard ground hog gun. It groups less the 1-1/2 MOA with black bear loads(lots of recoil)............tamer loads would shoot better I am sure. The 45-70 is a great and versatile cartridge so I can understand all the support for it though many that have not tried it may not understand all the interest in it. ;D

I have owned a 45-70 and though it was accurate I didn't care for the recoil with full loads or the wasted space in the case with light ones.  I bought a 44 magnum barrel to do what I would have done with the 45-70 which is plink, shoot hogs and have in my truck for general principles.  I have 4 barrels at present, 30-06, 223, 44 mag and 243.  I also have several other bolt rifles in similar chamberings excepting the 44 magnum so if I could have but one Handi rifle it would be the 44 magnum.

Wait.
I want a rules clarification.
Is this if I can own only one Handi but still own other things.
or is this a Post Obama   >:( rule where we are only allowed to own ONE single shot long arm?
