NAACP Branch Readies for Confederate Flag Fight

A flag fight is brewing in southern Florida.

Members of the Miami-Dade branch of the NAACP want the Confederate flag banned from the Homestead-Miami Motor Speedway, and they will meet Thursday to decide whether to boycott a NASCAR race slated there for November.

Debra Toomer, the branch's chairwoman of press and publicity, said a planning session has been scheduled to decide on a course of action regarding the display of the flag at the Nov. 20-22 event, as well as its presence at city-sponsored events like last year's Veterans Day parade.

"The concern is there," Toomer said of Confederate flags. She declined to comment further before the meeting.

But officials at NASCAR and the raceway say there's little they can do to prevent spectators from displaying or waving the Confederate flag.

Do they really feel a boycott will have any impact at all? Somethig tells me a lot of their constituents are not nascar fans anyway.

Yep they have. They are the ones breaking into the parked cars and steeling all your stuff while everyone is watching the race.

I read that story and got a real kick out of it. NAACP is going to NASCAR to protest the Confederate flag's showing up at race's, and they have had a rule about not having anything to do with that flag for over a decade. No race car is allowed to have one on their car, no race track can display one.
Since all my ancesters came over in the late 1800's, and I don't have anybody that was related to me that actually fought in the Civil War, I guess that the Confederate Flag doesn't have the same meaning. Black's look at it as a sign of slavery. I look at it as a sign of rebellion. James Dean,Hell's Angels, hippies,etc. Rebelling against society, the govt., ''the man'', whoever the hell that is. Doing your own thing, right or wrong. gypsyman

In Tampa, the sons of the Confederancy went to the county and asked for a date of remeberance for their ancestors who fought in the war.

The commission denied the dy. The sons then had a member with some land next to the interstate. The made it into a memorail park. They went to the commission for permission to fly a flag at the park which was granted. The sons then tried to buy a 30' x 50' confederate flag. It seems no one would make it. They had to go to China. It now flys over the park next to the interstate.

For those who know history, they recogonize it as a battle flag. It is not a symbol of slavery. Our society has attributed every evil they can to a battle flag. It is sad we cannot respect those who fought for both sides in the War. It was not about slavery only. It was a 10th Amendment issue. Sounds like what is happening today in the States. Learn from history and do not repeat the errors of the past.

The NAACP would not have a job if they didn't stir the pot occassionally.

My buddy told me I could join if I had ancestors in the Southern Army. I found 10 from GA under my surname and the counties my family came form.

Maybe some of you on here with historical understanding of the Civil War could educate them as to why it was not "all about them". Coming from this "Yankee", textbooks and phony media have conditioned us to believe that it was all about slavery.
This outdated, phony organization has to make sure they look like their doing their jobs so the $$ keep rolling in.

I find it highly ironic that the NAACP wants to boycott (keep blacks away from) Nascar when for years they have been complaining that Nascar wasn't inclusive of black drivers or fans. It seems to me that they are defeating their own purpose.

ummm... NEXTEL.... Who is that... them folks are dead and gone.... so is the service or at least is blows now... The US bought the iDEN network from Sprint and took control of it on Feb 8 2008. If you are a (Sprint customer with Direct Connect) you may have noticed an increase in the amount of (System Busy) errors you get. The reason is that the iDEN network has a "Priority" feature that allows certain customers to have "priority" over other users. Before it went to the Nextel customers but it is no longer that way. Now all "Direct Connect" subscribers have a "priority" of "0" and Government Phones have a "priority" of "5 - 9" depending on the department.

Oh yeah the Hybrid phones from Sprint are the worst of all them because they use a combination of technologies iDEN for the Direct Connect and CDMA for the phone service. Those phones are the i402, i502, i902 and any other that have a 02 designation on it.

Also note that the Direct Connect feature is not considered a Phone service and eavesdropping laws do not apply... not to mention that the network is owned by the government.

If you can find it there is a program called "iDEN RSS" there are several flavors of it but if you can find the Lab or Carrier Versions or even the Depot version I think, you can change the "Priority" of your phone on the network. I did this to 2 of mine shortly after 2-8-08 and have never got the (System Busy) message again with those phones. Just be VERY careful not to mess with anything that you don’t know what does or you can screw up the phone to the point it will no longer work.

Just thought I would throw that in.... and yes there are black NASCAR fans... not many but there are some... but when you have a sport that was created by a bunch of rednecks would you expect it to be very ethnically diverse?

People like Jackson, Sharpton, Farrakhan, and the NAACP are what I like to call "Race Pimps". Their whole purpose in life is to stir racial tension and invent problems where there are none. This then leads to people giving contributions the their cause. These people will never allow an end to racism or discrimination because it would mean an end to their livlihood.
Of course, that's just my opinion.

A biography of Robert Toombs, Secretary of state for the confederacy, Georgia legislator, and Confederate General. This one is my favorite, because it was written by one of my cousins in 1892.

Many of the conditions that exist today with the exception of the issue of slavery, is discussed in these books.

When you finish these, I'll provide you more of the way southerns of the time viewed states rights.

To me the BATTLE FLAG of the SOUTH is about my southern heritage, it has nothing to do with slavery.
They seem to forget that it was a black man who sold the first slave in the US and that there were blacks up north that owned slaves during the war.
Not all family's in the south had slaves.
Our family was to poor to own any in south west VA during the war.

They force me to honor their heritage with MLK day but won't let me honor mine.
If you go into almost any black home in AMERICA you will see a picture of MLK & JFK.
They both did a lot of good for the blacks.
I have told several that the pictures they should have on the wall are LINCOLIN & ROSA PARKS.
LINCLOIN freed the slaves and ROSA is the one who got them recognized by sitting in the front of the bus!

What happened to the blacks was just a part of our nations history.
It is done and we can't undo it.
Look what we did to the AMERICAN INDIAN!
This country don't owe them any more than any one else.

I fly the BATTLE FLAG of the SOUTH along side the AMERICAN FLAG on all my trucks and my bike.
I will never dishonor them by taking them down!
If they want to boycott nascar that is up to them and I don't think it will make much difference and I doubt it will stop those that choose to fly the flag from doing so.

Those are excellent links VictorCharlie and very appreciated. But holy smokes guys, if your looking for a good education on the Civil War, we have one of the best forums on the internet right here at GBO for that purpose. I'm sure many of you are well aware of it, but if not, it's the Civil War aka War of Northern Aggression Discussion forum. The moderators, Ga.windbreak and SouthernByGrace are totally in tune with what the Civil War was really about, and I doubt there is a question on that topic that they can't answer in an honest, educated manner. Just go read some of the past topics in that forum and you'll be in for a real eye opening experience when it comes to anything Civil War related. By all means check out the links provided by VictorCharlie, but also check out the resources we have right here at home:

Let's see, black communities ravaged by drugs and crime, in some areas better than 70 per cent of the children born into single family households, huge dropout rates, gangs, economic illiteracy. Makes sense that they should attack something like a flag. What else have they got to do?
