What's with the dovetail on the Rossi 92?
« on: May 28, 2009, 05:16:24 PM »
I picked up my .357 Rossi 92 the other day. Shot it today and had a rough time hitting a paper plate at 50 yards. The sights are horrible to my eyes.

I had a Marbles rear semi buck horn rear sight and brass bead front sight. I tapped the old ones out and attempted to put the Marbles set on and the slide right in and fall out the other side without any resistance. I tool this sight off my Henry .22 octagon barrel.

Are the dovetails a non standard size on the Rossi?
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

My Rossi 92 had quite a good set of rear buckhorns standard but I could not use them . Turned out not only was the dovetail a couple of thou oversize it was not cut at 90 degree's to the octagonal barrel and sat slightly off centre . I used digital calipers to measure the dovetail on the original buckhorn and it was .381 , I ordered a Skinner compact dovetail mounted peep in .382 which has a locking screw - no more problems the rifle shoots better than I can hold .

The front sight blade in my rifle was also too low , its gauged at .381 so I asked Dr Skinner for an oversize dovetail on it as well - worked a treat .

I made a small/thin BCS (beer can shim), which I placed under the Marbles rear sight I temporarily installed on my new Rossi .357, while I set up to D/T the top rails for a Win 94AE peep.

The BCS worked perfectly, tightening the sight in the barrel dovetail, and was hidden underneath the sight's male dovetail.

I use a shim like ranger44 and when I got it right, tapped the dovetail with a small punch to lock it in.  DP
