Magazine Conversion for Browning BLR
« on: May 29, 2009, 12:57:02 PM »
Hi all,

I am researching my next project, which will begin within the next few weeks. It is to be based on the Browning BLR chambered in .260Rem. I am interested in finding information on increasing the BLR's magazine capacity from 4 to 8-10 rounds? Are there high capacity magazines avilable for the BLR? Or is it possible to adapt the BLR to take a higher capacity Magazine from another manufacurer [ie: Accuracy International or others]? This rifle will at time, be used in timed shooting where up to 10 rounds are fired on the course of 5 targets. 2 4 shot magazines is an option, but not really adequate. I much rather prefer to set up with higher capacity magazines if it is possible... I have posted this elsewhere without luck. Any info or ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you.

cheers,

Cam....

whew! yu aint askin fer much huh?
not sure ive ever heerd of such a thing. yu might look into a local machinist to possibly slice your mag in half and machine a extension and silver solder it in between the bottom and top.then yull have to trial and error a spring to make it all happen.good luk

I've never seen an extended mag for the BLR but there could be??  Still it shouldn't be too hard to make ssomething up. Cut and splice a piece into the  existing mag and use a spring from an M1A or the like..  It may even be possible to just replace the bottom section of the BLR mag with a lower piece from the M1A box..

I say practice with your rifle until you find the ammo your rifle likes,  4 shots are more then enough for a big game rifle.
OR trade for an AR-10

I've been reading up on the poor man's battle rifle idea, and this sounds like a worthy project for that purpose. Keep us posted if you figure it out!

260Rem is not the caliber I'd pick for timed shooting though ... was that caliber specifically chosen? or you just shooting what you got? I like stock competitions myself.

I have a BLR in .358 and have been thinking of another in .308. The .358 has been reliable in functioning and feeding under normal hunting and range conditions. One of the reasons I chose the BLR was because I'd need to load and unload the rifle numerous times a day where I hunted - the magazine made it easy, but not real quick. I guess a fella could learn to change mags quick on one with practice but I wouldn't be slamming them in alot unless you kept a close eye on the mag latch and spring.... Sometime back while researching scout rifles, I found some reference to the BLR's "problems" but no mention what they were. The rack and pinion seem reliable enough, the mag latch, sear and trigger design could be a bit better IMO, so could Browning's support of them. Try to get parts for anything but the newest BLR 81's. Still, I like them. They probably arn't as tough as a Marlin 336 but have other attributes. If you have come across other folks with experience with these BLR's, please share it - I'd be interested. Thanks!
Keep your plow share and your sword - know how and when to use them.
