Some questions...
« on: May 29, 2009, 10:15:08 PM »
I'm pretty new to the whole T/C scene so here's a little background. I recently purchased a used Pre-G2 Contender with a 14" Mag-Na Port .44Mag barrel and a Leupold 2X scope and a .45/410VR barrel. Now onto my questions:

I've found a new T/C 14" Stainless barrel with the factory brake in 7-30 Waters on clearance for right around $85.00 OTD, so for a deal like that I can't pass it up. I figure Leupold Dual Dovetail Rings and base but what scope? I'm thinking either the Bushnell Elite 3200 Pistol Scope 2-6x 32mm Multi-X Reticle Silver for right around $160.00, Bushnell Trophy Pistol Scope 2-6x 32mm Multi-X Reticle Silver for around $105.00, or the Nikon Encore EER Pistol Scope 2.5-8x 28mm BDC Reticle Silver for around $200.00. Which one would you guys get? Money's kinda tight right now so this stuff is going to be purchased over a period of time, and I work for a FFL so hence the low prices ;D

Also, Which dies have you guys had luck with? I figure a FL die set for re-forming 30-30 cases and for the bullet seater, and then a neck sizer for case life.

I'm hopefully going to go deer hunting for pretty much the first time this year here in Michigan and was contemplating using the 7-30 barrel on my Contender or my recently acquired used Win. M70 25-06, just depends if I can go in the pistol/shotgun zone or the rifle zone.

Any and all help/info will be most greatly appreciated! and I'm sure I'll eventually have more questions once I get all the required items for loading and shooting this beast ::)

Forgot to mention this barrel will be going on my Pre-G2 blued frame. Any issues with this?

Thanks!

Scott

I have both Bushnell and Nikon scopes and the Nikon seems brighter in low light.  Don't rule out your 44 barrel for deer.  I've taken deer with a 44 and they usually drop where hit.  Check your state laws on pistol; some states will only allow straight wall cases as pistols.  Welcome to the world of Contender, they're great shooters.  Someone else will have to chime in on the 7-30 waters.  I stick to calibers that I can find store ammo in a pinch, except for my 357max that came on my Contender.  It had been reduced to a price to good to pass, due to the max barrel.  I already had a 357max DW and a large amount of brass.  The 357 max has taken deer out to 100+yds with 200gr cast and quick kills.

If you plan on hunting the shotgun/pistol zone in Michigan, here's what the regs say.  "A conventional (smokeless powder) handgun must be .35 caliber
or larger and loaded with straight-walled cartridges and may be
single- or multiple-shot but cannot exceed a maximum capacity
of nine rounds in the barrel and magazine combined."

If you want a solid scope mount, you may want to try the Weaver set up that I've been using. You can pick my pistols up by the scope repeatedly and never think about it. The long 4 screw base is a Weaver 92A and the 1" high matte scope rings are #49042. I lap the rings with a Wheeler Engineering scope lapping kit that uses gritted compound. These rings are the steel-topped Weavers so, it makes a smooth mounting surface that grips solidly. You can mount dozens of scopes with the Wheeler kit and never have ring marks on your scope.  I like it a lot. If you loctite the base and ring screws, it's pretty much permanent.
