Is 250 Enough?
« on: May 31, 2009, 05:41:08 AM »
Is 250 30-30 once fired brass enough reason to get a barrel? ::) I've read a couple posts about the 30-30 and wondered if I would have a need for one or just be for fun. I had this brass in my closet I shot over 10 years ago in a lever gun before I sold it. Don't like it just sitting in there not going bang. Have 2/3 of them tumbled gonna deprime and ...... Never really cared for the 30-30 but don't think I have the stones for a 45/70. That improved version sounded interesting-deer at 300 yds. ??? Where can I find loading data? Just started itching and twitching and you KNOW!  ;D Maybe I just need to go out and shoot the medication I have :)

IMO theres always good enough reason for a new toy!

I killed many deer with a 30-30 when I started hunting but I'm not a big fan of it for deer as there are so many rounds that get the job done better. I think it would make a great plinking round though.  Might be fun trying to get the 30-30 to hit some long range targets!  I once had my lever gun hitting 12" targets at 400 yards.

Go for it, the 30-30 is one of the most popular H&R chamberings due to being very accurate with factory ammo and having light recoil, it's right up there with the 357 and 45-70 and one of the must have H&R barrels. The improved version makes it even better if you handload, I get 2865fps with the 125gr Sierra Prohunter SPT in 375Win brass, Ammoguide shows 144 loads for the 30-30AI, I worked my load up using QuickLoad 3.4 predictions using 60kpsi as a max pressure which is the SAAMI MAP for the 375Win, using 30-30 brass velocity will be less, but it's still a very capable 300yd deer round. Even the factory Hornady LE 160gr ammo is capable of taking deer at 300yds, 3" high at 100yds hits 12" low at 300yds with over 1000lbs energy. ;)

That is $70 of brass new, figure $35 used. Gonna want to full length size it for a different gun. So IMHO it is not a good reason. Be easier to spend $14 on 50 new brass and neck size from there.

I would think a new toy and a whole range of different ways ( i.e. bullets) to play with it that you couldnt in other rifles , Then hell why not ... I think the thing that appeals to me the most about getting a 30-30 barrel is the various different ballistic tips etc that I could never have safely used in my lever guns ... Which in and of itself is one hell of a selling point , Then like Tim mentioned , They are known shooters..

I say get it and play with all that lonely brass you have squirreled away ;)

I'd sell or give away the brass to someone with a 30-30.

Sorry Mitchell, there were a couple missing in a couple boxes. Only 230, guess we will have to wait on a new 30-30 barrel. :'( Wow, the phone just rang and I looked out the window and there were 4 Bucks at my 100 yd backstop. All had velvet stubs, one with a fork. Maybe my new 44 mag will touch one this fall. Beautifull sight, made my day. My son was able to get a good look also 8) Anyway I think I will bag the 30-30s up till the barrel program improves and I learn more about improving the 30-30 cart. As you can see, if this picture posts, that I have enough on my bench to keep me busy right now ;D

There no reason to improve the .30-30.

;) Big, I would say get the .30-30 barrel. I once bought 3 boxes of .300 Sav. ammo at a yard sale for $5.00. :o Then spent $500 for a model 99 to shoot the ammo. :o :-\ :-[ Nont real smart but it sure is fun. That old Savage is one I try to use a bit each fall. Also, the old .30-30 is better than most give it creditfor being. I have a 94 and a marlin. The Marlin wears a scope, while the 94 is a peep. I have used the Marlin on mt. lion, antelope, and whitetailed deer. Personally, with in its range, say 175 yards, I much prefer it over a .243. It is a great plinker with cast bullets also if you are into that. :D

Sounds like some like it and others have no use for it. I may get it when I send in for 357 and Hornet. Need to dry out a little and let them catch up at the factory. Got the monkey off my back a little today. Shot a couple 44s and 223s.
Wife yelled to me to come up and look at the deer, we watched them for about 20 mins before dark. The 4 bucks I saw earlier brought 3 friends. Never saw 7 bucks roaming around in my field at one time. Great way to end the day. Called my buddy and told him there was a stag party out back. :D
Glad I'm not the only crazy guy to buy ammo for no gun. Target had Federal 243 Win. over ten years ago for $2.99 a box. Was about the last year they sold slugs. I think they marked them as slugs were $2.99. They had no other ammo. I bought all ten boxes. :-X
I still need a 243 someday.

I have had four 30-30s, three rifles and a pistol.  Still got the pistol (Contender), got rid of the rifles.  I've used the Contender for Caribou and Black Bears.  Works fine for that, up close and personel.

Sourdough, Up close and personal sounds fun. I have a Contender 44 mag pistol, always wanted to pop a deer but never had a shot when I took it. Did you use your Contender on that bad boy in your avatar?
