Need a stock for a ....................
« on: September 18, 2003, 12:57:25 PM »
Looking for a stock for a Yugo M48.  I read some where about a regular large ring mauser stock not fitting a M48.  Any truth to that?

Thanks

I want a sporter type stock.  The M48 is in pristine condition, unfired if you believe the ad.  I'd like to leave the military barrel and have the action drilled and tapped.

Steve357:  Boyd's stocks has what you need.  The 98 Mauser stocks will not fit the M48, they are just a hair too big although you could probalby bed the stuffing out of it to make it fit.  I have heard that stocks for the M96 Swede (sporter stock that is) will fit the M48 but they are a bunch more expensive.  Also, one of the Remington stocks will fit the M48 without much work.  Personally, I would call Boyd's.  I have a stock for a 98 that I have yet to begin work on - was/is going to be a project gun for a CZ24/52.

If you intend to have the rifle drilled and tapped for a scope, make certain you have your gunsmith either bend the bolt or cut and re-weld it so you have bolt to scope clearance.  If you don't care about matching serial numbers or things like that, the Brownell's catalog has some very nice replacement bolt handles you can go with that when fit properly give you excellent clearance for the bolt.  Me, I like the 'spoon' handle of the earlier Mannlicher rifles and will probably do just that to my M48A (after I find a M48 trigger guard and magazine base for it).  HTH.  Mikey.

steve,

I spend most of my time on the blackpowder, but like to  look around and found your question aboout a  commercial stock for your rifle,,,,,A suggestion and reason.. I have nothing against a commercial stock, but it  (for my part) gives me a lot of pride to show my rifles to friends and say that I made it by myslef and that I made a stock design that I really like and took the time and patience..... It is real rewarding to see your efforts hanging on the wall watiting to be shot.....

I start out with $8.00 worth of pine plank, make  my stock according to my wishes, fit it, and then if it turns out,,,,  I give it a good stain... It  is sure a l ot cheaper that a commercial job, plus a lot more satisfaction,  ride and undersatanding what the early gunsmiths  went through to make their  pieces...... It is a lot of fun to get away from the boss and hide for a few hours during the day where a guy can have some peace and quiet....

If you would like more  ideas and suggestions, contact me ..--

I would like to talk to you.......
