There are "mausers", and then, there are "mausers".
Most Mausers in .308 are sporterized/conversions of some kind, from a military rifle/carbine - since commercial .308's are usually well-marked.
It's impossible to tell exactly what you have, without any kind of physical description, or a pic - so someone could have a starting point.
For instance, is it a cock-on-opening Mauser Model 98 or an earlier, cock-on-closing Model 93/95 ?
If you don't know how to tell the difference, or what specifics to describe, a pic or three would be best.
