Big, you're absolutely right. I need to think along your lines. Now, I've got a 7mm-08, so I really don't feel a great push for a .270.......besides, Pattys got a .270 tack diriver I can use any time I want.................but, a .280 might be a whole different game.
Ya know, they need to come out with deer tags by caliber so you can take one with each caliber every year. Just kidding. They'd be all gone the first year. My hardest decision each year is what do I want to shoot. Let's say you've got 20 "deer rifles", and can only take 2 or 3 deer. What to use this year. In pre-Handi days, my .308 Ruger M77 MKII was my hands down favorite. Now it's collecting dust right next to the Marlin .30-30s. This year, the Handis in .357 Max and .45-70 will be the first picks. Last year, I took my first deer with the .45-70, and was totally impressed. People are going to argue this point, I know. I shot that deer at 220 yards going away, bang flopped it right there and saw it go down. Most times, I can see my bullet hits regardless of caliber. In the case of last years deer, I saw the hair and dust blow off his shoulder, saw him go down, and knew he was planted....and that was with the .45-70.
