when to give up

Hi there all been reading this spot for a long time but never posted so hear gose  i have a ultra bull barrell thumb hole stock 223 and i have tryed everthing to get this to group went through the FAQ and did all that applys did a trigger job very nice 1 3/4 pound pull no creep have try all kinds of powder  and bullets from 40 to55 335 332 748 varget get about the same reslute with all bullets seated out and in and everthing in between two shot close and one out sometimes way out have had four diffrent scope and mount combos barrell looks good just got through polishing the bore nice and smooth no tight spots so what do you all think keep trying or send it back :-\

Since I started with these single shots, I go at it a little different then when I shoot bolts. I don't really go for groups, I want the first shot to always hit what I aim for. Some have had a problem like yours. If you get two close, try waiting a while and go back and fire another. I don't think of them as bench rest guns.
My new game is set things out at different ranges and shoot at them at different times. Like golf with one club. ;D Don't know if I've helped you any. If you've followed the FAQs I don't know what else there is. Good Luck!

Welcome! Just out of curiosity, how close are the first two shots and how far away is the third? You said the first two are close and the third is way out. Are you talking way out as in a few inches?

How old is your barrel?
Could it be one of the newer ones with the 1 in 9" twist?
If so, it just may not like the lighter bullets.
I have no idea.

Johnnie ,

 Let us know how old the rifle is , that will play a big role in us helping you .... If its the 1 in 12 twist of the older barrels then i have a load i want you to try that makes itty bitty 3 shot ragged holes at 100 , if its the 1 in 9 twist which is what the new .224 caliber barrels are , your going to find a heavier bullet might be the just the ticket , My 1 in 9 handi 223 loved ( under a dime size group at 100) a 75 gr hornady TAP round ... So let us know ..

Read the Handi Basics 101 sticky, particularly the part about shooting it without the forend on, if the third and subsequent rounds stay in the group, you need to work on the forend.  ;)

You may be able to get the accuracy and consistancy of a bolt gun but I don't think you should expect it.  If it will do the job you bought it for then keep it, if not, make a grape stake out of it and move on, life is short and it costs a lot of money to try make a silk purse out of a sows ear.  I have a lot of Handi's and make a bunch of custom barrels, but when I need to shoot an itty bitty group or have the first shot go exactly where I want it, I use a bolt rifle.  Larry

I have done this and it shoot worse with the foreend off than on this is a new gun 1in 9 bull barrell only had it for 2 weeks i had a mossburg ssi before this gun 1in 9 it would put 55gr. v max in one hole all day long was hopeing this would to :-[

How many rounds have you shot thru it?  Is the barrel tight on the frame when the forend is off?

try a heavier bullet, different powder, and try shoot'n from a strapped lead sled...
i have never had any luck with varget----but thats my onion-- ;D
others here will prolly flip-out on that one !!!!, but all barrels and there shooters are not the same.
the 60 grain nosler partition or the horny v-max 60gr should do you well.
i have 1/12 and a 1/9 both shoot the same boolit great!!!!!

i also have many bolt guns, but i can't stop tinker'n until my handi's will perform just as good or better.
i'll send you a pm with a load that will do it right with both twist barrels, according to my testing..

if your getting 2 shots off great, then the 3rd one goes tits up!!!----HEAT !!!, even tho you did say its an ultra heavy barrel right?,,,,,, should take more heat than a standard or ultra-lite barrel before walking.

I think heat could still be the issue here.  Clearly, the rifle is accurate enough to place two rounds next to each other - so quite a bit is right.  If it has not been tried, I would try shooting a group with at least 10 minutes between shots, starting with a fouled bore.  If it groups, than the problem is heat.

Just a thought.....

Before you decide to make a grape stake out of her, try some 60 gr. V-Max or 64 gr. Win. PP or even some 75 gr. A-Max.
My 1:9 Handi just don't like anything 55 gr. or under.

First i just want to thank you all for you help as i said i did polish the bore last night and add pressure to the forarm tip went to the range tonight first 3 rounds went into a nice .644 group and the next 2 groups were about the same all under a inch at 100 yards with no sigen of stringing i think ill keep her this was with 55gr vmax h335 again thank for you help think i will try the 60 vmax and 75 bthp THANKS
