Found out I was a Langley
« on: September 19, 2003, 08:14:54 AM »
I had hit a brickwall on my Tidwell so when Teri asked me if I would help her dad with his Langley line I told her yes I would.  She got the information I needed and I e-mailed Adian Langley who had a Langley database to see if he could help me.  He told me that he didn't have anything on Teri's line but he could tell me all about mine.  I e-mailed him back and told him I didn't have one. He e-mailed me back and told me yes you do and that my 4th great-grandmother Sarah Tidwell was married to John Jackson Langley.  All of this time I was looking for Tidwell as the surname for my 3rd great-grandfather Francis Marion Tidwell father.

If it hadn't been for Teri's dad I would have kept going in the wrong directions on my Tidwell line. I think the Lord for bring them into my live.

I found out that John Jackson Langley was the son of Ozwell Langley and Chowa-you-cah(Cherokee Indian)

The story goes that Sarah Tidwell refused to go to Oklahoma with John Jackson Langley and while he was gone she changed her name back to Tidwell and raised my 3rd great-grandfather Francis Marion as a Tidwell.  John Jackson Langley left Georgia for Oklahoma about 1832 and came back to Georgia at a later date.

Parents of Sarah Tidwell: Old John and Celia Tidwell settled on the west side of the Chattachoochee near Young Deer Creek and had six daughters who all bore children by Cherokees. Three married full-bloods and three married mixed-bloods. This was in Forsyth Country, Georgia

There was some nasty comments made about Old John and Celia Tidwell by Hugh Montgomery(Cherokee agent assigned by President Monroe) concerning the 'abominable' practice of certain white men who gave their daughters in marriage to the Indians and this distasteful and immoral practice of intermarrying between the races had produced a 'motly race that was propagating yery fast on the Chattahoochee and it's waters.'

Nice to meet another cousin on the Tidwell side of the family.  My great-great grandparents were John Tidwell & Susan Abernathy. Their son Franklin Isaiah & his wife Mattie Virginia(Garrett) were my great-grandparents. Their daughter Ada Clementine & her husband Major McRae/McRay Warren were my grandparents.  My parents were Edna Louise Warren & James Robert Fields.

My great-great-grandfather John Tidwell had a brother named Marion Jefferson, who was married to an Ada & they had a son named John Dudley Tidwell, who was born February 17, 1897.  I was wondering if this is your line.

Our 3rd great-grandfather Francis Marion Tidwell is buried at Unity Cemetery in Cherokee County, Alabama.  Here is a picture of our 3rd great-grandfather. He was a private in Company F, 2nd Regiment Infantry, Confederate Soldiers from Cherokee County, Georgia.  This picture was sent to me by Don L Shadburn.

The information that I have came from the Family Bible of John & Susan(Abernathy)Tidwell.  Francis Marion Tidwell was born August 7, 1829 in Forsyth County, Georgia & died October 27, 1886 in Cherokee County, Alabama. He married Margaret Ann Gravett/Gravitt on May 19, 1847 in Forsyth County, Georgia. Margaret Ann was born 1829 in Forsyth County, Georgia & died August 17, 1879 in Cherokee County, Alabama.  According to family members she died shortly after moving to Cherokee County, Alabama. She was very sick when they left Bartow County, Georgia.  She is in an unmarked grave next to Francis Marion. There was a second marriage for Francis Marion & I will have to check my records to find that information so I will send it later.
