Small ones same as above or I would pull the meat off and cook like chineese food.  Fast stir fry with vegtables.
the large ones were cooked like fish.
Paper roast (cooked in parchment paper with either rice or pasta)
pan seared and finished in the oven
fried on the stove.

I have seen chicken snakes(rat snakes) climb a greased pole to get to purple martin nest to eat em!

Short of a fire trench, you arent gonna keep em out if they think food is there

The day I eat a snake of any description will be the day, I have been hungry for several before, and not another meal in sight. I won't say "I never" but, I will say I have no plans to. ;)

Yep Never say never, I've eaten snake but would only eat it regularly if push had come to shove!

When I was little and had a BB gun I went around the ack yard and was shooting all kinds of things that I had out as targets.  i then saw a sparrow in one of the trees and shot it.  i think I was 7 or 8.  and showed it to Dad when he got home.  He made me clean it, cook it and eat it.  Telling me that if I shoot it I have to eat it.  Exccept for mice and rats.  So since Rattlesnake is edible and does kind of taste like squirrel, why not if you have to get rid of one.  trust me I don't set out to go snake hunting but no need to let it go to waste.
But then again I see the liver and hearts of Pheasants a food while most people chuck them.  Fried Phesant liver is better than fried chicken liver and the little hearts are just as good as chicken hearts.

When I was kid starting at about 4 or 5, I was given a BB gun also. I shot every sparrow I could get to stand still long enough for a shot. My friends did like wise. Why? It was fun, and sparrows carry mites, they get into grain bins and pollute them, they nest in the most unhandy places, they proliferate like rabbits, and crowd out the NATIVE SPECIES for nesting, like MARTINS. Sparrows ARE NOT NATIVE to American and are a pain in the rear.
Now for the question: How did they taste? ;)

Sounds good to me. The Moc-sci-can tasted just like the rattler.
Thanks. eddiegjr

Lousy from what I remember.  I also could not really cook at 8, I may be able to make it some what tasty now or drown it in green salsa.
well it was bad enough that I did not shoot another one.
aslo stopped me from shooting other song birds.  Dad did it so I would not kill all the birds in the housing development.  but since dad called pigeon a flying rat I guessed the same rules for rat applied.
and dad had to show me the rules about Dove and that I neede a hunting license.  i did like how they tasted.

I guess it all boils down to where your from on the definition of song birds. Here the English Sparrow is considered a nusiance. Song birds here are Mockingbirds (Lord those things never shut up), wild canaries, Cardinals, and even Blue-jays. Orioles and such also. In the last few years, those south American grackles have started showing up (hate'em) and the giant south American dove have moved as far north as the Texas Panhandle. It's like shoot'en pigeons their so big. The morning dove is considered a song bird here, and good eating too. The south American version of the dove sounds more like a horror movie version of the dove.

We have the euroasian dove here in CA too.
so far I have seen them during the dove hunt and have been trying for a hat trick in one day of a mourning dove, white wing and euroasian thing.  So far only white wings and mounrings.  have to stop my self from shooting the little ground dove (they are protected and a hefty fine)
I grew up in NJ in a housing development built around an old Nike missle base where we would sneak in and play/ hunt or do other stupid things.
We had a slew of birds.  Some were pests.  But I don't think dad cared, I think he did not want me killing things because I could but to have a reason to kill it.

I have eaten it several times but only cooked it once. It was great in the taste area, the negative is the thought of eating a snake and I did think about that. Never ate a crow but would try it.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

Just ask my wife I've eaten crow on a few occasions! One Sunday in particular the whole family had fried chicken and all I had was crow!

And the biggest part of the time there will be two if they are the smaller size. Seems like the really big ones are solo though. They all stink to high heck.

Snake control: a small thermo nucler device should work well, just remember to do a little research and set it far enough away from your house.. You don`t want to scorch the siding... Also Rattle snake isn`t bad rolled in flour and fried in butter or, it`s quit tastey smoked in your handi "LiL Chief" smoker!!!    Gary

Snakes can climb most anything as long as they can keep a hold.   Hopefully the elimination of the rat situation has solved Alan's problem.  But since June is their breeding season,(well in this area), you'll find them all wadded up in a hideous monstrous ball in shallow waters.  Wonder if a shotgun would  knock out a bunch of 'em?  :P

About 6 or 7 years ago we had the worst drought since the 50s. I rode my 4 wheeler down a white rock creek hunting hog sign. All I had was an automatic shotgun with slugs and a 45. I came around a bend in the creek and it made my hair stand up. A pool of water about 35 feet long, 20 feet wide and about 6 to 8 inches deep was swarming with cotton mouths. They were just scooping up the trapped minnows. I sat there on a rock ledge and killed 18 or 19 till I ran out of shotgun slugs. On the way back to my 4 wheeler I shot 2 more with my 45. It would give you the creeps. They had been following the water holes as they dried up, and that was about the last one. I had never seen that creek go dry in my life as it was spring fed, so no telling how far down they had crawled.

most farm supplies carry snake repel. Some say and use lime . the spread a thick 2 foot wide strip around where ever they don't want snakes to enter. The snake repel looks alot like it . Some let a couple pigs run loose as they eat snakes .

A guy at the feed store told my wife that one of the ingredients in "snake repel" was the ingredient in moth balls so she throws mothballs under the chicken coop to repel the snakes.  ???  ::)

the snakes that come prolly get confused and think they have entered a cedar closet!  ;)

It would be easier to lose your unnatural fear of snakes.  Men shouldn't fear reptiles.
