Understand what ? I understand that if my kids got to close they got bit so no bad snakes in areas around the house . Kids stay away from areas near creek where snakes are unless you watch where you walk , not a play area .

Had a 21 year old son get bit by a cottonmouth.  Nasty, bad, and hospital didn't have enough antivenom.  So, any posionous snake is a dead snake around me.  Others can slide, especially king snakes.

There are no bad critters.  There are ones you eat and ones you don't.

The ones that eat people are bad to have around IMHO. The Yote is now where I live , the Black Bear is also as is the MT Lion and we did just fine with out any of them . Now we have trash cans turned over , small dogs and cat dissapear ( not that cats missing is a big deal) , Farm critters killed etc. Car bear accidents and other damage . We don't have the wolf yet but I'm sure some idoit will try .

Most of the Wolf problems are confined to Washington D.C. There are some minor problems in the other northern states, but not to the extreme that is in D.C.

Now that you mention it Dixie, the snake problem is much worse than the wolf problem in D.C.

if'n i had seen that pool of snakes, you can bet i would have been back as soon as i could have gotten more ammo.  and with that wheeler, you should have been able to haul enough out there to make an impression.

more ammunition to that pile of snakes.  i would have made a special trip back and might have brought some friends.   the only good poisonous snake is a dead poisonous snake.

I went back the next day, but I'm not that dedicated to killin snakes. The coons had cleaned up the mess I made, and there will always be more cotton mouths here.

Found the similar situation once with a .22 pistol. Made a quik trip to the house for a remington 1100 and mucho shels. Had a blast in that quarter mile stretch of creek. I admit most of the snakes were water snakes but they got in the way of the cottonmouths. The snake problem has went away since Otters have moved into the creek and set up residence.   No snakes but way fewer fish also.     Get a river Otter that will do it.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

Yep; when you find 'em like that its usually a right now occurance and they're gone.   I had a dry creek bed experience once.  The little water hole was less than 10' long.  As I approached it I noticed it was churning up weird like.  I slowly crept up close enough to see small fish darting ferverenty back and forth.  Then something formed in my vision just above the waterhole on the bank.  It was a BIG cottonmouth just laying there.  I think all my blood drained out.  But I recovered and pumped him full of lead .... Wheh.....

Cottonmouths are all over the south from Texas to Virginia.

Check the map.  They are a very aggressive snake also.

Yes they will climb out of the water when they come to a dry place and sometimes it's a boat.  Most folks kill harmless water snakes thinking they are cotton mouths.  Their range is very limited.

There's no limit to Cotton Mouth's around here.   When a snake gets in my face I run if I can, beat it to death with my fishin pole, or shoot it.  Then I ask "what is it ? "......  Ain't learned to control myself yet. ;D

Exactly who is most folks??? I can only speak for me and the folks I have grown up with and around, but we see a lot fewer water snakes than cotton mouths here in South Alabama! PM Gendoc if sometime if you want some more verification! In my part of the world 9 times out of 10 if you see a snake in/around the water it is a cotton mouth. Now I will also say that most of the encounters I have had with them they did not chase me or immediately strike at me, but they are aggressive and should be eliminated from around ones home.

Good advice....It keeps those who should stay indoors anyways from getting bit trying to kill a snake that isn't bothering them.

If folks are scared to be in the outdoors why do they go there?

it isnt that people are scared, it is because it is soooooo much fun blowing them to smithereens with the shotgun.

As I mentioned in my first post on this subject, that I had several run ins with the old cottonmouth when I did alot of hunting in N.W. Louisiana and E.Texas. I have stepped upon the top of fallen logs and as you are taught at a very early age look down before stepping down ther other side of the log. On two occassions I looked down to see the wide gaping mouth of a cottonmouth coiled and ready to strike! A 12 gauge at that range does wonders!! Late in the fall I would be squirrel hunting and walking down the middle of old mainly dried up creek beds and on occassions come upon a cottonmouth coiled up to where he was in a patch of sun. sometimes I would be 10-12 feet from them and they would strike in my direction, although the strike was somewhat slow because they are very lethargic due to the very cool nights and mornings.
I have during the early spring, had on two occassions, cottonmouths to actually get after me. One was shot by my brother, and the other time I was lucky to be able to pickup a limb about 8 feet long  and manage to get in a good lick to break his back as I was backpedaling
as fast as I could !
Had another one try to get in the boat with me!
Yep! Don`t much care for old Mr. Cottonmouth!
Also if you are ever unfortunate to get bitten and even if it is a dry bite, you can get deathly ill from the all of the bad bacteria in it`s mouth.

My granddad used lightbulbs about the size of eggs in hen nests.  A chicken snake would swallow the bulb, break it and it would kill him.
