In the (THE BEST 357 EVER ) THREAD alot of you picked a S&W model as your best 357 ever.
My question now is for those who chose a S&W as your favorite is ---
Would you still choose a S&W model 357 if it had to be a new production gun (two piece barrel, MIM hammer, internal lock)?

Sure would. The new production "classic" .357 N frames are fabulous. The 27's are great but still wish they would re-intro the 28 Highway Patrolman again. Something about it being so "plain" makes it really cool!!! I have always loved my 28 that was made in 1958, no dash. But certainly would not kick a new production out of the gun safe.

Sure would, I DAILY carry a Model 60 with Ajax ivory grips, a Tyler T-Grip, my own action job, and 125 grain jacketed hollow points.
The L frame Model 686 4 inch is as good as it gets, although I must admit, I would prefer the original 686, and Model 19 or 66 would still be first choice.

I love my 627-5PC, but due to cost and scarcity of ammo, I am forced to use my understudy gun, a .22 617 for most of my practice.

I haven't owned the new S&W 357, and i'd like to shoot one for a while BEFORE i answer...

I like my S&W's Pinned and Recessed, thank you. That means none of the new ones.I have no problem with cast,MIM, two piece barrel, but flat hate the internal(infernal) lock.

So far it's 50-50!
And I'm pretty sure that those who like the new S&W's with the lock would still buy the older style if it were made today.
So if S&W would go back to the pre lock guns, this poll shows they would double revolver sales.

Good Point!!! Oh, and if the surfers at the S&W marketing dept get wind of this, I'm sure ya'll do.....Bring back a "classic" Model 10 with a tapered barrel. Heavey barrels are cool, but the tapered barrels are "classic". Better yet, make a run of the Victory models!!! I would be your best customer!

I have a S&W Mod 19 357 mag 6" barrel: th,tt,ts, & a Mod 17 4 22lr with 6" barrel th,tt,ts, both are very accurate & were tuned by a master gunsmith. I had a SS 1976 Ruger Security Six in 357 mag with a 4" barrel, wish I'd never traded it off it kept me & my family company on numerous backpacking trips in the Marble Mtn Wilderness Area,Klamath NF in Siskiyou County,CA and on hunting trips to N California & Colorado. I recently purchased a SS Ruger GP100 4" barrel in 357 mag but haven't shot it cause I'm on restrictions from back surgery,Dr raised my p/u weight to 15 pounds so I'll have to get my Dillon RL550B back on line.

some S&W guns can still be had less the lock . Its only a few mods.

Sure would, and did: 629, 29, 29, 25, 327, 329, etc.

About half of my recent new S&W purchases have needed correction of some annoying manufacturing fault (botched muzzle crown, unfinished chambers, excessive barrel gap etc), but I still keep buying them. No one else produces such brilliant variations of a revolver. And the modern S&Ws are probably better made overall than earlier ones because now they have CNC machines to keep tolerances in check. If they could just remove all human intervention in the manufacturing process, then the quality would go through the roof.

I like my new and old S&Ws. My new ones include a 627PC and 625JM. They have one piece barrels. The 627 has forged parts, the 625 has MIM parts. Both are good. Did they require any work? Yes. I expect to have to "dial them in" for my exact desires. I often replace the rebound and main springs, replace the firing pin with a longer C&S pin, recut the barrel forcing cone and generally smooth the internals. Sometimes I have to replace the hand or cylinder locking bolt to get timing and chamber alighment exactly the way I want them. When I get done, I have the exact gun I want. Something that I could only get from a custom maker who was willing to indulge my fanticies.

I have an old SW586 that I thought was the best 357 ever made. It still might be, but I recently picked up a new SW620 which is the stainless L frame with a 4"bbl and a 7 shot cylinder with those 2 peice bbls and its now my favorite. Its not as smooth as the older 586, but it handles really good. I am keeping both.

I marked that the S&W's now are as good as any made. with all the computer driven machinery I bet they are even better
But I don't like the new looks.
they look like a Taurus revolver when they first started making S&W knock offs.
there is something wrong with the looks of the frame mounted firing pin.
While most of the lines are the same as the old ones..... They are just a little out of protortion to me.

All but one of my recent S&W purchases have been used guns. The only new one with the lock is a 638, and I guess I'm gonna have to remove that sucker. So far I've found a 10-5, 57, 25-10, and a 24-3. Very happy with all of them. Still hunting for a 57 or 58, a 6" 24, and a 3" 13.

I don't think I would have any reservation with buying a new smith, well other than the price anyway.
I've got several of the oldies. My favorite carry is a model 28. The old thing hada nice action job done on it before I bought it.
Shows a little wear, but keeps putting lead where I point it and goes bang everytime I pull the trigger.

For those of you complaining about the locks, the company that bought S&W was the lock company out of Arizona. Don't expect the company to take off something that is there bread and butter.

Hellbound; Is the 8.5 Unique you load under a 200 grn for your snub 45 Colt? Or is that a 25-2 45 Acp?

The snub you see is a -8 in 45colt. It started as a 4inch. Now it is 1 9/16. I still load 8.5unique [205g] in 45autorim. Now I use a faster powder in the 45colts.

I use Unique extensivly in smaller calibers, have found Trail Boss to work great for cast, 2400 for jacketed. My Bisley 45 Colt likes the 300 grn XTP's. My 625-9 Mountain Gun likes the 200 grn bullets.

I would not choose a new S&W as best, to be the best it has to pass the test of time and in my opinion the two piece barrel and the frame mounted firing pin (too short ofter) in the S&W have not yet passed that test.
They certainly don't look as nice as the old S&Ws with the polished blue frame.

It's been awhile since I started this thread.
But if S&W would see the results that as of today shows that only 1/3 of the responders to this thread would BUY $$$ a new S&W $$$ revolver from them,,,, maybe someone at S&W would see that they could up $ales by 2/3 if they went back to making THE BEST REVOLVERS IN THE WORLD again!

I just bought one a few months ago. I've had a couple older ones and I see no problems at all with this one. As far as the lock goes......I coulc care less as I never would use it anyway so its a mute point. Handles well, shoots well....and looks good. No problem for me.
