I just thought yesterday was bad.
« on: June 05, 2009, 03:13:25 PM »
  As you all know I went to the hospital yesterday with a severe kidney infection.  The doctor was concerned that I had such a bad infection at my age considering I don't do drugs, or drink anything but juice or water and an occasional gatorade.  I exercise regulary so there wasn't a clear cut reason for the infection.  After he sent me home he ran some additional test on my blood work.

 I got a call from the hospital today and some bad news. My bloodwork revealed genetic markers for Polycystic Kidney Disease. I went in today for more testing and my kidney imaging showed multiple cyst.   It is a genetic disorder with no cure. Treatment includes a rich raw food diet, lots of water, and eventually dialysis or kidney transplant.

If one parent has it there is a 50% chance of it being passed down to a child. Of coarse I am concerned about my own health, but my heart bleeds for my children and the possibility that they may suffer this burden and pain one day.

Prayers sent, get a second opinion on it though. I have seen alot of people get a bad diagnosis just to find out its false.

Both of my parents passed away last year.  My dad died of liver cancer last September 17th and my mom quit breathing in her sleep on November 17th.  My mother was only 44 and symptoms don't usually occur until middleage. She had many kidney infections in the few years she was unexplainably sick.  I bet is that it was her who had it, and no one found it in time.  I was fortunate enough to run across a doc in the er that went above and beyond.  The test he ran wasn't a standard one for a kidney infection, but he didn't like the fact that I was so young with no risk factors.

 He ordered a genetic screening to look for an explaination.  In the process he discovered the PKD.  I feel like God was pointing him in the direction to help me.  Now we know what is wrong and can take steps to prolong the life of my kidneys, and get me on a transplant list asap, so if the time comes hopefully one will be available.  I am going to a specialist monday for a second opinion and if it is confirmed will begin a round of meds that will hopefully slow down the development of the cyst and increase the overall health of my kidneys.

Thank you all for your concern and your prayers.  I have faith that it will be ok somehow.  They always say what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger, and obviously I could use a little more strength.

This is bad news and I'm very sorry to hear about it.  So your doctor picked this up on a genetic screening, but is he going to order that screening again to double check?  I think they normally do an imaging look see at the kidneys to verify.  Meanwhile, I've heard of people following the diet/meds and some common sense homeopathic remedies living longer than anybody.  Hang in there.

...TM7

He found genetic markers for PKD in my bloodwork.  He already did my kidney imaging and found cyst.  There are two types of PKD, and the next set of genetic screening is to determine which type I have.  Matt and I are researching and will be trying different natural treatments of our own.  I figure if we do what we can and let the doctors do what they can within reason then the combined effort should make me better.

I want to prolong the life of my kidneys as long as possible before getting a transplant.  I will know more Monday, but at this time it doesn't seem to be advanced enough to require surgery at this time.

HEATHER. Prayers sent, I'm truly sorry you are going through this. We will ask our church to pray for you in the morning. Cranberry juice is good for the kidneys, or you can get cranberry capsules. My wife is having trouble with her kidneys from diabetes. May God bless you and your family. Charlie.  :( :( :( :( :( :(

I had a Doc do something similar with me after I had a massive heart attack in '01'.  I had less than six months to live.
 With 17% heart functioning like a broken distributor in a V-16, he did a lot of study to straighten out the rhythm with medication.  All other doctors had thrown up their hands.   But still, my heart looked like mush with no hope.   Barely able I began going back to church and a young man came and put his hand on my chest and as he prayed for me I felt something inside I can't explain, but I knew I was healed.   I'm supposed to be dead now 8 years.   Last visit to the Doc I told him I was riding my bicycle 10 miles a day 2 days a week.   He ran me thru some tuff tests with reports of 49% heart output which he said is good for a man my age.

I'm ever so thankful to that Somebody Prayed for me.

I am feeling much better today.  Matt is off the hook for cooking, cleaning, and childcare.  I feel back to myself today.  The infection is about gone!  I still have to go see a specialist, but am working through insurance kinks.  I don't have any contact with my father's side of the family, but I couldn't find a history of PKD on my Mom's side.  Yesterday I located a aunt on my father's side that is in her late 40's and has been diagnoised with the disease for 7 years now.  She has had to have a couple of minor surgeries to drain the cyst, but other than that lives a normal life with no dyalisis, and is far from needing a transplant.  I am going to keep in contact with her.  It is nice to know I have family out there that is going through the same thing and is willing to help me through it.  She offered much advice and wisdom.

~~~~~  Heather; it looks like everyones prayers are already being answered..................... ;) ;)
Reminds me of a short story ~  A poor single widow lady prayed aloud daily near a window of her house.   A cantankerous old man lived next door was always complaining about her praying.   Telling her it was all in vain, and just plain foolishness.
One day he overheard her praying to God that she was out of food.  So, being the cantankerous old man he was, he went to the Grocery Store and bought a few items of groceries and set them on her porch.   When she discovered them she began praising God, and giving him thanks, when the old man appeared from around the side of the house shouting~ "God didn't send you those groceries, I got them myself. "    In which she replied.  "  God sent them alright.   He just used you to provide the means.
Heather, I'm so sorry to hear this news.  As a diabetic for 26 years my kidney's are starting to go.  When I got the news, I thought it would be the end of the world especially when I started researching what the future held.
I put my life in God's hands and found myself a good Nephrologist.  Nephrologists specialize in kidney function and only issues of the kidney.  My condition has been stabilized for 8 years now and I feel good.  Hang in there!
