Good Deal?
« on: June 05, 2009, 03:30:58 PM »
Hi,

I have a chance to get a contender with two 14 inch barrels. one is a 30-30, it has mounts and a cheap Ncstar scope, the other is a 14 inch 222, no scope or bases.  I can get the package for $500.  I don't really want the 222 barrel, but I figure I could sell it or trade it for a caliber that I want.  Is this a decent deal?

The contender has all wood grips, I would call them right handed target grips, similar to target grips on a ruger 22 pistol if this makes sense.

Also, hows the recoil on a 30-30 contender.  I am not really recoil sensitive, but I don't want to punish myself for fun.  I once shot a 308 encore and found it really unpleasant, I thought much worse than the 375 JDJ that I had just shot.

Sorry to ramble,

Thanks
Tyler

I have both of the barrels you describe.  I don't find the 30-30 much more than the 222, but that will depend on how you load it.  I am recoil averse and I don't mind my 30-30.

I've shot a 10" .30-30 and the recoil was abrupt but manageable.  I've got an unported 14" 7-30 barrel myself and the recoil out of it is not that bad.

It sounds like a good price to me.  I'd get it and either keep the .222 barrel, or as you mentioned, sell/trade it for what you do want.

The price is fair but not fantastic.  Figure $150/barrel and 200 for the frame if all are in pristine condition.

I didn't think the 30/30 recoil too bad; it didn't take the skin off my hand but then I don't mind 500 S&W recoil either.

I've got the 14" barrel, but mine's ported and recoil is not bad at all.  I've taken deer with it out to 150+yds.  The 30 30 rounds can be found most anywhere and my TC barrel seems to digest a variety of factory ammo with equal accuracy.  Good on any outback hunting, when the specialty ammo gets left behind or lost.

Thanks for the replies, I think I will just hold out until I can find one in a caliber I really want, or one that is such a good deal I can't pass it up.

Thanks
