My 45-120 STILL rocks!
« on: June 05, 2009, 05:15:20 PM »
First off I want to apologise to everyone I owe responses to; emails, PM's and the like.  Heck, I didn't even get a check in the mail to Larry (Trotterlg) until after I received the mounts from him!   :(  :-[  But I promise, I'll get back to everybody!  Soon!  Trust me...  ::)

Anyway, not having been able to get to the range since March, I couldn't stand it anymore and took Wednesday afternoon off from work.  This range trip was primarily to do the things we'd talked about it the previous thread; confirm velocities and compare standard and magnum primers.

Well, it was about 88 degrees, not much wind to speak of and I had the range to myself!  Just the way I like it!   ;D  The loads were 50 and 51 gr. of 5744, everything the same except 6 were loaded with CCI LR Magnum primers and 6 with Federal 210 LR's.  The velocities conformed to the last trip's average so the first rounds must have been an aboration.

Here's the targets for the 51gr loads.

You can see that there is little difference between the 2 primers.  The mag's targets with both charges says they're a little faster and group a bit better, but that could be caused by a number of factors other then the primers!   :-\

One thing is sure, that rifle can shoot!   LongTom, I think the original owner of that barrel was a little off when he said it wouldn't shoot jacketed bullets!   ;D

Now, I know a 1900 + fps 405 gr bullet load ain't much by Tim or Tyler's standards,  :-[  but I have 3 other rifles to get ready for deer season and this appears to be a reasonably accurate and mild recoiling load.  So I guess it will have to do for the time being...  8).

However, I will still play around with some 350 gr. loads as magnum primer availability permits!   ;)

The 405 grain bullets will probably perform much better at your velocity!  Yes, what yardage?

Well DUH!!!   :P ::)
But it was late, yada-yada-yada...  :-[
100 yards.  During load development I always shoot at 100.   ;) :)

Well Tyler, as you mature you'll learn you don't have to do everything "RIGHT NOW!"   ;D  Now listen closely here boy... I'm gonna learn ya sumpin real important!  Doin sumpin you enjoy is like dateing beautiful, adventuresome and uninhibited young wimmins!  Wonc't you accomplish your basic goal then the pressure is off and you can relax and play around; really enjoy yourself.  And remember, experimenting is fun!   You can go from mild to wild (as those people who shoot them little 45/70's say  ::) ) but you don't have to do it all at the same time! ;D   This 'minds me of the old bull and young bull standing on a hill looking down at a herd of heffers!    :D

Now, it appears I got me an accurate load for deer huntin this season.  It may be a little underpowered, them 100 pound south Jawja white tails been known to charge if wounded,  :-\  but it'll do.  So now, anytime I get the urge I can grab her, we're talking my Handi Rifle here, and get done whatever needs doin!  But she's so darn purdy, willing and so much fun that I can't help but day dream about all the things I'm gonna do with her.  And remember, I don't have to do them all at once!  That's the key point I'm trying to make here!   ;)

And toys!  I got 350 gr JFP's and a pound of 3031 and I got 500 gr. cast FNGC's.  I can get HOURS of enjoyment with those!  And that's before the first round slides in her chamber!  If I feel really kinky I can even get some of those Ranger Rick 720 grainers!   :o  Who knows, she might like it...them...  :P

So you see, more speed is a minor point.  Sure, I'll move toward my 405 @ 2250 objective, but slowly, and while trying other stuff at the same time.  Stuff like working those 350's up to 2500 and the 500's to 2150.  When I get her there she'll go insane and those watching - men like to watch when you get something like her going; but you already know that, you vidio tape and post your sessions! - those watching will be all in awe of your prowess!   8)

What I'm telling you is to relax Tyler.  Learn to take your time and enjoy yourself, after all, that's what wim...  :-[ uh,... um,... er,... GUNS are for!   ;D

I WORKED THIS WEEKEND!  Now that seems off topic, but what it really means is I will soon have some spendin' money to get that .458 throater so I can get some higher velocity going on!

Real nice going there Richard! ;)  I got the 325gr up to 2400+ and the mag cci's.  405grainers at 1900 ain't nothing to scoff at. I seen how a Laser cast 405 will turn a whitetail upside down at 1300 fps.  I couldn't imagine with an expanding bullet!

You gonna be hunting with a scope?

I picked up a 260 barrel I've been playing around with way too much.  Havn't had enough time for the fat tall wimmins, I mean guns.

Why yes I did.  I posted on your other Rocks thread.  A pic too.  Sorry you must have missed it.  Im using 5744 also, but much more with the light 325's.  I like some of the 4895 loads fromNFG....I'd really like to try some of those soon.

I REALLY want to dispose of a ground hog with my 325 ftx at 2450fps.  And I will observe the Man Rule of posting pics of the carnage.  My best friends farm is slowly getting overrun with the buggers this year.  Cant have hime losing any profit....
