44 mag in a 444 marlin
« on: June 06, 2009, 12:40:34 AM »
Just interested to know if anyone has ever shot a 44 mag round through a 444 marlin. I was told
it will work but wanted to hear more input.

The case head diameter is larger on the 444, so is the guns chamber.
A 44 mag would fire, but the brass might rupture or it would extract hard and look like it's pregnant.  I would not do it,   Jedman

Jedman nailed it, if you don't mind having over 30,000psi pressure blasting back thru the firing pin channel directly into your face and from the standing breech, go ahead and give it a shot!!!  :o ::) Barrels are marked with the chambering for a reason, it's not wise to shoot ammo in it that wasn't designed for it.  ;)

A picture is worth a thousand words.

I've always been told the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask. I figured
someone had tried it. From the looks of that picture I won't be . Thanks to all
for your input.

You could make some powderpuff loads in the 444 though.

This would be the safest bet!

I bought two of the 444 handies because we are allowed to use them as primative weapons
instead of muzzle loaders. My 14 year old weighs in at about 140 soaking wet and after I was
told it would work I thought it would be a little easier on him. I've worked up a pretty good 444 load
using the new flex tip bullets from hornady so we'll just stick with the real thing and he doesn't
seem to mind them. Truth be known his model seven in 7/08 kicks about the same. He killed three deer
this year so he doesn't flinch too bad.
