357 Mag in an 1894c

Hi All,

Is a 357 enough gun for whitetails?  My local GS has a 357 cowboy, used for $350.  Is this a good price?

How accurate is this rifle?   How far is this round an effective deer round if it is?

Those are hard to find in some parts and that's a good price. Some get "near" 30-30 with a good load.

If you get it and don't like it you'll have no trouble finding a buyer.

The 1894C is a excellent deer rifle within limitations.  I've taken several deer with mine.  My load of choice is a 158 grain Remington jacketed soft point loaded at 1750 fps but the Hornady XTP's in 158 or 180 grain loaded up to the same speed work well also.  I would avoid most if not all hollow points as they tend to not perform very well if bone is hit.  They may work but sooner or later they will fail you.  The Hornadys although called hollow points are really controlled expansion with a small dimple in the nose.   I limit my range to the 75-100 yard range but wouldn't hesitate on a 120 or so yard shot if a broadside picture presented itself.  As to accuracy, I use a scope and groups will run 2-3 inches at 100 yards depending on load used.  Don't let anyone fool you............the 357 mag in a rifle performs beyond any paper ballistics anyone might throw your way.  I might add I've taken two hogs at 35 and 60 yards using a hard cast 180 grain gas checked LBT type bullet.  The 1894C is simply a fun gun to shoot with either 38 specials or 357 mag loads.

BTW...........that price is a steal for that gun.

  The rifle is fine for whitetails, but you must limit your range to 100 yards.

I love mine. I have taken my longest shot at a deer at 125 yards and it was a bang flop. I have killed loooots of deer and hogs with it at up to this range. If you want your money back on it just say the word!  I usually load 140 gr xtps and 145 gr winchester silver tips for mine and have never had a reason to change.

I picked it up, and I cant wait to get to the range with it.  I have to take it apart to clean it up - it looks like it is loaded with cosmoline.  The stock is kind of beat up, but the bluing is in good shape.

im one that isnt much of a fan of a 357 but shooting it in a rifle makes it an all together differnt proposition. In a rifle its a more then adequate deer hunting round.

The little '94C I had years ago is one of those "I wish I had kept". It was a very consistent 1 1/2 moa rifle with Federal American Eagle factory loads or any good handload, honest five shot groups with just and old Weaver J2.5 scope with a wide post reticule. The .357 rifle is not legal for deer in Colorado but where legal I think it is about the most versatile "survival" rifle one could get. For small game and plinking one could load a .360" roundball or light cast bullet with 5 grains of bullseye for cheap and quiet shooting on up to 180 grain JFP's for deer and even elk. The Winchester '94 can handle the Speer 180 grain flatpoints but they're a bit too long for the Marlin. With a magazine full of 125-158 JHPs it makes a great defensive gun. Ammo is cheap and it's easy to carry a lot of rounds and you can use the same ammo in a revolver.
 Dang! I think I just talked myself into getting another one. >:(

I have looked for about 3 years for one in a marlin and every one that I find is beat up or the price was out of range most were in the 600 to 700 range if it was nice at all.

Great Price, you made an excellent choice.
Got my Marlin 357 about 4 months ago and it is sweet.  Does not want to feed the 180gr, too long.  Loves the 158 JFP and I use two different brands of JFP and it seems to like both.  Started with H110 but have changed to Lilgun and accuracy improved.
You are going to R E A L L Y enjoy the 357 in a rifle.

DEACONLLB.  Try Wallyworld (WalMart), they can order you one.  I had one on order when I went to the local gun show and they beat Wallyworld price by $10.00 do I called and canceled....Actually got the same sales person and she wanted to know what the problem was...buy the one at the show and I will cancel this one....

I'm a Marlin fan, to be certain, but I have found I prefer the Rossi 92 for .357. Not for any other caliber, just .357. If you've not tried it, find one and shoot it. I don't think you'll catch anything permanent, or fall out of love with Marlin. Slim forend, straight stock, buckhorn sights ... got one this week with a really nice dark wood and pretty grain, no safety bolt.

Good find and great price!!

Those bullets that are too long to feed will fit in a 38Spcl case and feed just fine...have a ball!
