M&T the long awaited day when the beast is finished has arrived, your skill and hard work has paid off!

I say to all our brothers in this hobby  BEHOLD THE BEAST!  men will tremble when they hear it's roar!

And I say to you my brothers that those who were not witness to this creation will hold their man hood cheap!

And curse the day they were not on Greybeard's Blackpowder Mortar & Artillery Forum!  ;D

NOW if this doesn't deserve a 10 ft. Kewpie I don't know what does!  ;D

Actually I propose a new award for mega mortar building....... The Paul Bunion award!  ;D

Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

Thanks to all for your prayers, encouragement and kind wishes.  We find a delay of one day is necessary for the health of our crew, but this will allow us to make a final test load of two pounds and load one more bullet into the Suburban and also refine our shady spot tarp and it's poles and sisal, hold-down ropes.  We all believe that using nylon line has always been our mistake in trying to set up shade tarps in windy conditions.  Nylon stretches about 90% more than sisal, so we figured maybe that is what lets everything loosen-up and eventually fly away.

We bought several tie-down straps from our local scrap metal dealer and we can use the extra time to experiment with them to avoid trouble on the highway.  This trip to the range is 90 miles each way and is a good test of our method of securing the load.  We still have to finish our stake bed sides on the trailer for the trip to Montana.  Except for loading the trailer, everything else is done and our reservations are confirmed.  We will have to learn how to use the new company camera on the way to Montana and on Thursday and Friday before the shoot.  The old, (6 Years), Cannon, point-and-shoot, is just about shot.

Test firing on Monday!

Mike and Tracy

Allen,

You know, now that you mention it, the picture does kind of bring to mind the Gollum, but I'll have to admit the first impression I got (just crop the two knees out of the picture) was definitely of Mini-Me.

I guess maybe it's a good thing I can't get to the Montana Shoot this time, I can just hear Gary now: OK Boom J, you just mosey on out there and set those iron targets back up for me, and I'll stay back here on the firing line to make sure nobody gets careless. :D

2lbs of powder in my Mortar ?
« Reply #133 on: August 03, 2009, 05:42:23 AM »
I think it would become a frag bomb !  Chamber holds 3.5 oz  , I would imagine 2 lbs would be close to sub orbit distance !   ;)
Will have to build the next One with a 6" deep powder chamber , That would probbly push a 10 lb ball a mile .   8)

well 'the beast' lived up to its name !! it was hot out there . really hot , not a cloud in the sky .

yi carummba i never saw anything like that b4 .

those water jugs go into the earth about 9"s

we blew the skin off one  :o but the concrete core hung together and remianed in tact ,minus skin .

400 yards or so out into the prickly parries with a hand truck to bring the bulitts back.

god it was hot ..... i admit to being the first one to suggest we get the heck outa there . so officaly ..it was on me . then the funnest thing happened mike and tracy agreed with me 100% .

headlines '...three old stupid men found in the prarrie dead ....... '   sorry that was not scheduled for today . ;D

i would not dare steal anymore of tracys thunder . we where fortunaly graced with 2 two 'saftey meetings'

and lots of heat
for those who dont know ,...within the orbit of seacoastartillery's mind ,, 'disscusions' that go south in less time than it takes to write can become a saftey meeting .

voices can raise in the interest of saftey to near to volume that can hurt my ears  .

sometimes mike is talking about saftey with tracy , other times ...(read...mostly)  involve tracy cluing in mike to some obsceure violation , sometimes he disscuses for 2-3 mins.

i was fortunate to capture an actual saftey call on my camera in video w/sound .....

i just figured out how to do this last night . but i have no clue how to post a video ....besides ...what happens on the Pawnee National Grasslands should stay in the PNG  ;D trac y will post as soon as he can gather his wits ...it was really hot ....

Thats what I'm talkin' 'bout; that was great! You can really see the mortar bed press down into the - trailer bed? - from the recoil force, and then it rises rocking it forward a bit before it settles back down again. Thanks guys!

now Ive been watching the start of that vid guaranted 25 times
it seem to be a tremendeous downforce on the base , the complete mortar and base is almost bouncing on the trailer .
did you reinforce the trailer or did you put something beneth it ??
this one is probably a little bit to big to be shot from a trailer without any modifications ,

i havnt heard one comment either way on the darn color ,good or bad .

well is it 'the shade' of green that's good ?    too dark , too light , humm seems it was a good call . ...if maybe somewhat dull .....BUT only in certain light ! ....i havnt seen it in the dark  ;D

when that thing went off w/1/2 lbs. from about 20 feet away ......well ,i figured out how to 'video' w/ my camera last night .

my skills went to nuts when that thingage went boomish . i would not be a good combat video guy .

for a moment i'd have sworn it was any shade you'd care to name .....but i did catch both shots on my camera . so if i ever learn how to post it .....

You know I was so focused on the smoke flame & fire that I didn't realize it was still on the trailer.....

I hope you are inspecting it for cracked welds etc. before the road trip.......

Guys, use the start stop button to achieve a stop action photo effect, and you can see that it's not the base of the projectile that's on fire, it's a ring of fire coming from the bore that catches up with the base of the projectile in flight.

i havnt heard one comment either way on the darn color ,good or bad .

Yeah OK, I get your point Gary, I didn't even stop to notice the colors when I looked at the M-M being fired the first twenty or so times, :D but now that I go back, and pay it some attention, the vid has the bed looking as dark as the tube.
