Would I be an outcast if I got rid of my 45-120?
« on: June 09, 2009, 06:21:07 AM »
This 45-120 just isn't giving me the power I'd like!  :-[  I think it has helped me learn about real recoil, and how to control it.  When I shoot it now I don't really think twice, when it was "new" I had to think "Don't flinch Tyler, don't flinch", but now it's just like another gun.

Maybe I have some sort of disease, but I ran across a guy with a Ruger #1 in 45-120, with a 29" barrel.  I could run higher pressures to my heart's content, no 40k cap anymore.  We're talking about prices right now, and I was wondering if I would still be welcome here even if my only single shot was a Ruger.   :)

Don't come back until you have reamed the Ruger into a 45-150.  Another 45-120 is an inexcusable lateral move.   ;D

You don't have to have a H&R to be welcome here...ya just can't talk about the Ruger when you are here cause we don't give a rats butt what your Ruger will do. I suppose there are the same sort of folks on the Ruger Forum as there are here NOT. You and your gun have reached near legend status and now ya want to throw it all away I don't get it. Kurt

Now Ty, Atlaw has got you all addle brained talking about wimmins.  That rifle ain't no woman.  So that means you can have more than one without breaking any laws.  You can have as many as you like!  If you get the Ruger and don't like it, you still got the Handi if you get my drift.  No need to burn bridges.  If you ain't got room for both, I'll be glad to store it for ya. ::)

I don't see how the Ruger stock could be any worse than the Handi, it's pretty much a paddle shape.  ::)
I would love to keep the Handi, but I don't know if there's any way I can find the money to have both.  We'll see...

Here's some 60k pressure loads for the curious-

405 grain Remington                      Recoil-86 ft lbs
Muzzle velocity  ......Ve = 2700 fps

500 grain Hornady                         Recoil-94 ft lbs
Muzzle velocity  ......Ve = 2424 fps

720 grain Ranger Rick                     Recoil-124 ft lbs
Muzzle velocity  ......Ve = 2000 fps (only 54k pressure too!)

FYI 460 Weatherby has less case capacity than my fired 45-120 brass, so assuming the chamber on the Ruger is close I could run the same speed as the Weatherby.

Ty,

I sold mine and missed it before I shipped it.  Sit down and try to save some moneys first.  You just might find you come up with the cash eaisier than you thought.  Then you can have both!  It didn't take long for me to have another.  Good luck either way.

Tyler favors 4320 Dave.  I haven't got to try his loads yet but I'ma fixin to push some Hornady 350 gr. RNFP's with a charge (in the 70's) of 3031.   ;D

See the fun you'ld miss Tyler!?   ???  You get a #1 and post your experiences and everybody will say "That's nice, <yawn> ::)   Say, has anybody tried any new loads in their 45-120 Handy's!?"

The reason is simple... We all have Handy's, you will have a #1...  :(  Pretty soon you will feel left out since you can't contribute to our discussions.  Gradually you will come around less and less.  Oh sure, you'll try other big bore, Ruger and the like forums, but the respect and equality you have earned here won't be there.   :-\  To them you'll be this kid that wants to play with the grown folk...  :(

Naturally your fragile young ego will be crushed, you will doubt your ability, masculinity and worth and end up a homeless, drug addicted homer-sexal.  All because you want to buy a #1...   :'(

I just hope you are not to far gone and can still save yourself... Explore the limits of the 45-120!  Try different projectiles!  Report on all your efforts!   This will induce more folk to build one!  Next thing you know we will have our own forum!  Naturally you will be the moderator!   :o  From there the skys the limit!  Since, thanks to GB, you will be an internationally know personality, you would be a natural for TV, the movies, politics... even... dare I say... THE PRESIDENCY!

All because you didn't buy a #1...

 ;D

I just can't see the point of the .45-120 with smokeless powder.
