Kimber Montana in 300 WSM Questions
« on: June 09, 2009, 09:42:30 AM »
  ???

Anyone had experience with this rifle? Is it accurate, does it have manageable recoil, etc. I have a new model Ultimate Shadow Winchester Model 70 S. S.from New Haven and the action is not very smooth and the trigger leaves something to be desired . itis accruate however. In comparison, my 84M Classic is a sweet number in 7mm-08 so I'm shopping. I'm wondering if I will like the fact it has no floorplate for speedy unloading. I cannot find a Browning X-bolt in stainless so far this spring as I wouild like to consider that too. Your comments please.

Well, lacking answers, I pulled the trigger anyway. The mounts the dealer gave me fit the 84M and not the 8400 and he is 110 miles away, so I ordered a new set from Midsouth USA and will return the 84M's when I am in the area. I think the beauty will show at the range as it is does not have the most curb appeal of the rifles I handled today. I do like the light weight, CRF and the stock size. The 300 WSM caliber is a winner. I'm going for elk in Montana with my son when he returns from Iraq this fall.  ::)

I don't have a Kimber but an A-Bolt in 300wsm. It sounds like an ideal rifle for an elk hunt. I have used 180 grn partitions on a 1 shot B bear hunt. Hodgdon 4350 is a good common powder with 165 & 180 grn bullets. That model 70 trigger should be able to be adjusted much better. I'm not to familiar with the new model 70's, but others adjusted fine. An elk hunt with your son sounds like a great outing.

I have this exact same gun in .300WSM.  The recoil is pretty darn strong, and that's with a Leupold VX-III (not Vari-X) in 3.5x-10x-40mm.  I have shot 180 grain Nosler Partitions and Barnes-X.  The Noslers gave me about 1" groups at 100, with the X-Bullet shooting about 1 1/4."

The quality and fit and finish of this rifle is amazing.  The trigger is awesome too.

I have a picture of my groups somewhere....

And here is a group with the Barnes X (also Federal Premium) (and I think it was the Banes TSX)

;D I did get to shoot the 300 WSM Sunday AM. A happy Father's day indeed. It got a 1 1/4" group at 200 yds. with Winchester B.T. 150's.

You got lucky.  The Kimbers have an iffy reputation when it comes to accuracy.  Great shooting!

Consider a new trigger.  I bought a Winchester in 300 WSM about four years ago and like you, I didn't like the trigger.  I added a Jewell trigger.  Got more in the trigger and labor than in the used rifle, but its sweet to shoot now.

Years ago, people used to say that a scope should be nicer than the rifle.  I think the same can be said for some of the older triggers.

Do what you like, Kimber quality problems are common & very well known.

Okay, enough already.  I don't want to see this thread going bad either.  This is the second time that I am putting my moderator hat this week, and frankly I'm not too happy about it.  Geez...looks like I need to check these forums more often.
