Is there a .44 Mag faq thread?

I've seen/bought really old NIB handis lately. Going back to NN serial numbers. I assume that you may always run across older handis sold new, so it is worth knowing when things changed. Just ordered a .44 mag from an FFL. The FFL says that it has a CA serial number. Am expecting SB1, no sights, syn stock, and a regular bore, but won't know for sure til I see it.

When were bores oversized?

What is the correct size bore?

When did they lose iron sights?

When did they switch to SB1?

No FAQs for the 44mag, but there are a million threads on the subject tho, try the search for 44mag and overbore. Barrels were overbore before Marlin started making the barrels in late 2006/early 2007, a good bore will slug .429" in the grooves, SB1 357/44mag production started in 2008 along with no more sights on them. CA prefix is an SB1 as shown in the FAQs build year info.

Were the pre-Marlin 44 barrels way bigger than .429? 

I just got a 44 barrel and don't know the age, it slugs .4295-.430.

I currently own a 444 Marlin barrel that slugs in at 0.4328". It is a pre-Marlin barrel for sure with a 1-38" twist rate, but I don't know what year it was made. Shoots like you might think with jacketed bullets, as in minute of entire page at 100 yards. This one will become a stub for something much better later on as funding allows. This is the one and only handi barrel I have owned that is truly hopeless.

get an  oversized  mold from  LBT

ask  veral  on  his forum  here

or sell  me that barrel  REAL CHEAP
and  i will get  a mold for it and my oversized  44mag

Yes, jacketed bullets didn't do well until velocity was pushed to the max when rechambered to 445 Supermag, but oversized .432" cast bullet would work tho. You're good to go with the .430" barrel, some of the 2006 barrels were .430", mine is a mid 2007 barrel. I think the overbore 44mag barrels would do better if they weren't 1:38, but in combination with the overbore, it's a recipe for frustration.  :-\
