Tempted by 7x57 Brazilian Mauser
« on: June 10, 2009, 06:59:24 PM »
Anyone have any comments about this rifle? Century has a special on them this month. I don't care about the cracked stock.

I would like to add a Mauser to my collection, but would like a different caliber than the 8mm.

Mike:  replacement stocks should be available from Gun Parts Corp and the Brazilian Mauser is a fine example of the 98 (?) Mauser actions.  If this is a 95 it is just as good a example.  Hopefully your next post will read:  "I bought it"..............

I'd like to have a 7x57 but I'm a bit leery of Brazilian rifles, most rifles from South America have badly pitted bores. The one exception I've seen was the now long gone Argentine Mausers, many of which appeared to be unissued.

lots of these south american mausers were unused. They may have some blemishes, but the 3 venezuelan 7mms I have had were perfect in the bore dept

I bougth one with a cracked stock and it was broken off at the wrist.  I glued it back together and shot it for some time.  The bore looked like it had been used as a sewer pipe,  but it was quite accurate.  I have wanted another 7x57 since, for it was a great cartridge to shoot and reload.

Brazil was an ally in WWI.  They sent a regiment to France to fight in the trenches.  None of the men had winter clothes and some did not even have shoes.

You didn't mention what $$$ they're asking or what model they are, but I really like my two Chilean 1895's (small ring) in 7mm. A real pleasure to shoot.

If they've got the '98 receiver, all the better...

I don't get it.   Why be tempted to buy a beat-up, lousy bore, wrecked-stock, Brazilian mauser when there are so many other good 7mm military mausers out there?  Got to a large gun show, look around, and bargain.  By the time you pay for the Brazilian, plus shipping and handling, plus the one or two things you know you would do to it, you could have had a much better mauser to begin with, and something that would be much easier to sell down the road if you pair down your collection.

Food for thought;

The 1908 is a 98 action, and the 93 small ring action has the same stock as the swede mauser. Similair receiver cutout.  The 93 will go right into the swede stock perfectly.  The 95 small ring action has a different stock because the rear top side of the receiver butterfly's out on both sides of the bolt.

At one gun show I found an all matching numbered 95 chilean 7mm mauser and the metal and the wood matched the serial number.  The rifle is in excellent condition.  After seeing so many missmatched receivers and bolt 95's i thought i'd never find an all matching one in my lifetime.  You know its funny this rifle sat there thru the whole gun show and no one looked or picked it up.  I seen it and looked it over and went thru the whole show to see whats there before i dropped my cash on it.  I went back and it was still there so i grabbed it.  My point is I was stopped many times while on my way to the door and asked if i wanted to part with it.  Its funny that it didn't fit in the gun case so the butt was sticking out and the guys who stopped me knew what it was by the butt.  I just find it odd the rifle only got attention after I purchased it.

UPS brought me the Brazilian the other day. Actually it is in pretty good shape. The bore is bright with good rifling. The stock has no visible cracks, just some dents, some grime, and one chip. There is still a lot of blueing.

No range report, I have been busy and forgot to order the reloading dies for it.

For the $165 (with shipping) I am content.

Many an individual of nearly every species on Earth including Elephant (GOOGLE: Karamojo Bell.) has fallen to the 7x57mm.  Use a bullet matched to the game and it will do and has done very well indeed.  Fully suitable for every four legger in North America.  120 & 150 gr. for deer, antelope and black bear,  the big 175 gr. RN for the others, Elk, Moose, and Grizz.

I had a Braz. Modelo 1908 as my main hunting rifle as a yoot, My dad gave it to me for my 13th birthday as it was less than  half the price of a good used M94 Winchester.  I had no clue what a good round 7x57 was until I nailed an 800 lb cow elk.  She dropped in her tracks.   This was about 1966, I was using 175 gr Norma RN rounds as they were what I could find.   I am sorry I ever let that rifle go.

The 1908 is my preffered Mauser action. The ones I have used are all DWM Berlin made, fine actions smooth as glass. My Deer rifle of choice is 1908 Brazilian in 7mm X 57. I did rebarrel it with an A&B barrel it will shoot nickel size groups at 100 yds. But I have had some with good factory barrels that would shoot just as well. We used to give $45.00 dollars apiece for these. My how times have changed.

My Dad passed his old 7x57 on to me. This old rifle took many whitetail deer. As a kid, whatched my dad make a mighty fine shot on a beautiful whitetail buck with this old mauser. scout4<><
