PLANS FOR NEXT SEASON???
« on: June 11, 2009, 04:06:20 AM »
Just curious, what are your plans for the upcoming season?
Seems like over the years, when fur prices decline, there is a drastic decline in trapping activity. Are you cutting back, quitting,or going on as usual?

Planning on trapping as always. I dont worry about the price of fur.I'll take what i can get for it.  Hoping rats hold in the $3-$4 range mink $10-$12. Maybe otter tags will be easier to draw this fall. With all the rain we've been getting the marshes should be in good shape.

I'll be water trapping for rats and mink and maybe skunk and weasels. Raccoons probably won't be on the target list.

I'm not in it for the money but do like breaking even.

I plan to got to NTA in Lima and our state convention in September.  Guess I'll do some coon in late October like I have for many years. Then I'll play in the water some in November shoot some ducks, trap some rats, like I have for many years.
I make up my fall plans as things change and as I go, so I can't say anything for sure. I just go with the flow hunting or trapping as a feel. But I figure no matter what I choose to do. At the end of the season.
I'll listen to everyone else whine about what they got for their fur, like I have for many years now :-)

I know what I'd like my plans to be- trap $50 coyotes and $30 coon.....but...........

It all depends on if things have any value at all, then one has to detemrine if its worth trapping. I rely on fur to pay bills for those months, and if not above production costs, then I won't trap them.

Our coon should have some value- maybe about the same as last year, maybe a   little more. I could live with $10-12 green coon. And if coyotes/fox have any value at all , I'll run and gun them, something I don;t like ot do. But I'll need to increase production, and that cna only be done on my lnes by more new places,  fresh faces. I'd like to average 10 canines a day. At that price, plus coon/badger/skunk- I can make money.

Onn water, again hope coon is my savior. As far as mink. I'l ltrap them, but at $5-6 average I won't go an inch out of my way, and they wil lreally have to rebound (which they will not) into the high teens to expand. Easy to say hit the rats, which I will- but only so many to go around.

Probably a little more than last year . I just got permission for another 350 acre place today . Looks like there are alot of rats and beaver there .Coons everywhere too  . As far as I know no one has trapped there for 10 years. It has one good sized lake and 3 smaller ponds and lots of small tributaries into these waters . There is a trail between the 3 ponds that looks like a cattle trail . Just need to find out what critters are using it .

I think you will find out about everything is using those trials- during an otter study, we set up lots of similar trials with #11s, and caught everything from mink to coyotes. Set them heavy.

Will try to organize a 3-4 day northern rat canoe line b4 I need to go to a 4-day conference.
If the water is open I may go back and do some other rat canoe line for 4 days.
Last 3 days of Oct I will lay out a dry land coon line and then run a water and land trap line for a couple weeks.
After our deer season I hope to do some December canines and some late season coons.
We will see what January is like. I am working on a snow method that I want to try. If it works like most of my "unique Bryce Ideas" it probably won't be in print or on a CD. LOL

I plan to hit everything as hard as possible. Didn't get to trap any beaver last years so plan to make up for lost time. I'm hoping the decline in prices will keep the wannabe's at home. Don't need or want any competition. I can get pretty greedy sometimes. Worm

Espect to trap the same as I have for the last several years. land line in early November with a few coyote, fox and coon. Around Thanksgiving I hit the mink hard and take a couple of rats and a few more coon. I take my vacation in November each year, no mater how hard I try i can't get more days stuffed into that month. I've also found spring bvr trapping fun in recent years. I trap them like mink, bridge jumping!

Fish I too really enjoy the spring beaver season. Tons of work in a very short period of time, but with other seasons closed,it is a chance to focus on one animal.
No bridges here, but I do get to use just about everything to run the line.Boats, feet, truck and ATVs.Makes for a most interesting time of year.

I have some beaver to trap.  I will also trap coon, mink, and rats.  I do not think I will have time to head north and trap coyote and fisher.
