Factory Crimp Dies

I see many references to the Lee Factory Crimp Dies in regards to 45/70 reloading. My question is whether these are superior dies or is it something else. I don't see much Lee equipment sold locally so if all things are equal I would probably pick up RCBS. I get the feeling that the Lee's are somehow easier or otherwise better but no solid answers.

Try a redding profile crimp die they are superior .

The LEE factory crimp die for bottle neck cartridges is unequalled in ease of use and quality of crimp. Easy to set and holds the bullet realy well.

To me the biggest advantage of the Lee die is the lack of the need to have all cases trimmed to the same length.  For roll or taper crimping it is essential for a consistant crimp to have the case lengths the same.   For the Lee dies this isn't necessary.  Since I trim all my cases regularly anyway the Lee die holds no advantage for me other than price.

The other advantage to the Lee Factory Crimp die is that you can get a firmer crimp without wrinkling the case or pushing the bullet out of alignment.

IMO, the LFCD may be the be one of the best investments I've made in reloading dies in the 45+yrs I've been reloading.

I like and use them too but with handguns you kind of have to be careful with them and do some testing. they do size some when they crimp and in some cases ive found they iron out your cast bullet a bit and it ends up undersized and can effect accuracy. when i use them with a handgun load i allways load some with a factory crimp and so without and test for accuracy. Sometimes your better off buying another seating die and using it just to crimp.

There is no panacea in reloading.  May help, may not.  There is the possibility you don't need any crimp or the crimp in your seating die may work the best.  Buy it and try it.  If it doen's work put it on the shelf and wait for the next time you are developing a different load.

I use them for 9mm, 45 acp, 45-70 and 223. I love 'em.

Lee's Factory Crimp dies, rifle and handgun, and their Collet Neck Sizers are perhaps the best of their type dies available at any price.   But, as with anything else, they have to be used correctly. 

Somewhat like a good wine, in small amounts the Lee crimpers are very good but done to excess it ain't so good!

I have no use for them. Personally have never seen a situation where a good roll or taper crimp didn't fit the bill.
