bobg..Note: Contrary to what many folks think, your grandson may have a crack at a bear if he is in the right area and does a good, persistant job in his hunting. True; rarely does a hunter get one, especially an inexperienced hunter...but bear are increasing quite remarkably in the last few years. I live in southwestern NY, where most bear have been concentrated along the Pennsylvania line. Now the open bear season line has been moved northward. Bear sightings are becoming relatively common in my area.
My wife's aunt who shot a bear with a single barrel 20 ga years ago, lived on a 1,000 acre farm bordering Allegany State Park.
