bear hunting

   My grandson is going bear hunting this fall. He has a 20 gauge NEF slug gun. He says it is not big enough to kill a bear. I say he is wrong. Who is right?       bobg

You are right. If he says a 20 guage slug gun is to small for bear hunting. He may be to small to go bear hunting.

           Thanks for your reply. That is what i thought. The kid is the worst shot i have ever seen. I hate to see him buy a rifle that he will never use. I had better luck teaching my granddaughter to shoot than i have had with him.

Lets see;  Worst shot, single shot 20 gauge, bear hunting, know it all grandson.  Sounds like the perfect storm for disaster to me.  I hope he goes with someone knowledgeable & experienced that he will listen to.

If he is hunting in NY I highly doubt he will even see a bear never mind shoot at one.  Most especially since he seems to be a novice at this.

+1.  He might be a perfect example of a guy who should buy a lever action rifle.  He may need something that has plenty of ammo in it readily available.  I have a cousin who is like that and he would do himself a favor by buying a lever action rifle too.  I'm biased though because I try to use a lever any time I can.

   Yes he will be hunting in NYS. I haven't talked to his father in over 15 years. It looks like his father knows less about guns than the kid does. Sure looks like trouble to me.

Well grampa you can bite your tonge and try to help the boy or back off and let him fail . I can't tell ya which , you know the kid i don't . More important you know yourself and how much you can give . Note its not what you want to give its what you can give which is limited by what he will allow you to give.
Its not about a 20ga. its about respect that both of your will have for the other .
It might be as simple as buying some ammo and out shooting him with the 20ga.. Then give him one of those winks only a granddad can do and say it ain't the gun son .

Didn't realize it was that kind of situtation.  If I was on a jury I wouldn't convict any father for beating a guy who beat his daughter.  My little girl is 6 months old and I can't even imagine.  Best of luck with the grandson and his bear hunt.

maby you should find a friend who has no family involvement to teach him. nothing could hurt the boys future more than a negitive outing with his grandfather. sounds like he needs time and instruction on the shooting range.

i love taking kids out and watching them grow and be succesfull. i dont think abeating is going to help the kid out, do you?

  No doubt a 20 ga will harvest a black bear..it has been done often before. My wife's aunt got one probably 30 years ago with a 20 ga single smoothie.
  The lad sounds like he needs some love and tough love..I can't/won't butt into that except to say a good start is a Gramps that takes him under wing plus a good Sunday School & church.

  Perhaps this year there will be more chances for a bear than ever, they seem to be moving northward in the southern tier. Many sightings this summer..where I live.

IG I think maybe this kids gramps is leading him down a good path. I had to step back and think about this a little more, I can't fault a boy for trying to get another gun either.

  I was in no way criticizing bobg, I am sure he's doing his best in a tough situation. If I came off as if I were "on his case"...my apologies.
 
  bobg..Note: Contrary to what many folks think, your grandson may have a crack at a bear if he is in the right area and does a good, persistant job in his hunting. True; rarely does a hunter get one, especially an inexperienced hunter...but bear are increasing quite remarkably in the last few years. I live in southwestern NY, where most bear have been concentrated along the Pennsylvania line. Now the open bear season line has been moved northward. Bear sightings are becoming relatively common in my area.
  My wife's aunt who shot a bear with a single barrel 20 ga years ago, lived on a 1,000 acre farm bordering Allegany State Park.
