44mag for 357mag??

i have asked this on the ruger forum, but got asked to put it on the taurus forum to see if i get the same response. i have since decided to keep my sp101, but will leave this topic here to see what ya'll have to say.  i have a friend who wants to trade me out of my ruger sp101 357 mag., he is offering a choice of taurus tracker's 44 mag. he has had the guns for about 6 months, i've had the ruger about two months, he said he's shot only about 200 rounds thru each one, i've shot 50 rounds thru the ruger. he's got two tracker's a 2inch barrel, and a 4inch barrel, he wants my ruger and 100 rounds of ammo for the 2inch barrel tracker, and the ruger and 200 rounds of ammo for the 4inch barrel. he says the reason for trading is he's got two 44's and just want to get a 357 mag. should i trade?, thanks for any help. 
     
i tried to buy my friend some ammo so i could try the trackers out, he said no he didn't want to shoot them anymore cause he had them for trade and sale. that sold me to keep my sp101, i ain't afraid to put rounds thru it.

I'd question just how good a friend he is trying to dump a junk Taurus on you. Read some on this forum and you'll see just how bad Taurus quality and customer service is.

I wouldn't think about buying a used gun without a test fire.  I understand his concern about wear & tear on his weapon but it's not like you'll be putting a thousand rounds through it.  I would guess 50 at the most.  Another point to ponder is if you really need or want a .44.  The .357 is a fine weapon, particularly the Ruger.  This whole deal sounds fishy to me, I'd run screaming from it.  Of course, that's just my opinion.

I would personally keep your Ruger SP101, as you can if you don't reload get some really screaming loads in .357 magnum thru Double Tap Ammo.

The .44 mag is nice, but I believe you would be smarter to keep your Ruger.

Keep the Ruger. Nothing but trouble with the Junk Taurus gun.

I don't think I would do the trade, if you want the Tracker, just buy it and keep the 101.  I have a Tracker 44mag and have had zero problems with it.  Haven't run a large amount of rounds thru it and will be loading some loads that aren't so stiff.  My other revolver in 44 is a long barreled (10+in) Ruger and a couple of rifles, so my loads are right at the max for 240gr XTP's and H-110.  DP

 I would have very little use for a 2" 44, even if it was free. I'd keep the 357.

I would either would not be fun to shoot, especially the 2" Barrel.. I have a M44 Taurus with a 6" Barrel and have had no trouble and it has ported barrel to help with recoil.

Not wanting to wear the gun out by test firing it is like saying no test ride on a used car - Want to keep the tires round...  You were smart to keep the Ruger.  There is only one brand of firearm I would bad mouth, and that is Taurus, based on my personal experience with 3 of them, and what I observed with several others belonging to friends.  Being a mechanical device, any firearm can malfunction.  But when it is all the time, with many different models, spread out over a long period of time, well, it is what it is....

Taurus as you can see, is a love hate relationship.  Some love them , some hate them.  Over the years I have owned several  with only one I got rid of for bad accuracy.  My wife carried a PT140 for years with 1000s of rounds through it with no problem.  You will find many on this forum who have had the Rb's with no problem.  I would not carry any two inch 44 of any make.  I have carried the 4 inch N frame and even it is not pleasant with stout loads.  A Ruger Bisley in 5.5 is what I would recomend JMHO. 8)

I also agree.  I had two taurus 608 357's and both had problems.

If you want a 44Mag, buy one!  You can sell the SP101 for similar money as a Ruger SBH or you can own both.  I and my two sons each own a Taurus revolver and have zero trouble with them but I wouldn't trade a good ruger for any of them.

Ruger vs Taurus

I'm a sucked for a cheap gun... to a point

I've got a "bodyguard" 38 that I've probably put 1500 rounds through (mostly reloads, never +p though) and that thing will shoot ten shots (yes two cylinders, not in a rest) into the forehead of a "terrorist" target.... I shot the hostage in the forehead from 25yds that day to show off for a buddy.  I should mention that I was using 4grs of 231 backing a missouri bullet company 148grs wadcutters... but ten shots in a group smaller than a palm between the eyes and a little bit on the forehead (T-zone to people with acne)... that's as accurate as I've ever seen a snub.  I'll also add that my eyes don't focus, especially in bright light, because a bomb messed up my eyes a few years ago and I CANNOT focus quickly or stand bright light.  Maybe my gun is just on the top end of the bell curve, because I'm not (my handloads aren't bad though)... and I've bought a used and abused "junk taurus" (608) and I told them over the phone and on the note I sent to Miami with the gun that I tried to fix it and made it worse.  Used, tinkered with and mailed to them in a tumbler box that screams reloads through this gun, warranty void: the gun has had about three hundred nasty loads of 21.4 grs H-110 w/ 125grs bullets of various types through it.  They didn't even bill me for my idiocy!!!


As for Ruger, I used to have a Blackhawk that was chambered in .45 Colt. I had a belt mountain base pin that locked it up TIGHT!  Anyways it WAS altered but not the frame or cylinder, just the pin, and I put some REALLY nasty loads through it.  Two actually, a 360 grain hard cast lead roundnose at 1,000 fps, and a 300 grs JHP at 1,300.  Those loads didn't top 28,000 PSI or CUP (don't remember which) according to the Tech from Corbon but the cylinders were only built to handle 36,000.  Guess what, that gun was just fine after going through those nasty loads, lite 454 casulls almost.  I'm thinking that if a thin .45 Colt can handle almost thirty something thousand PSI then a .357 Ruger anything should be good.
