The Palin/letterman dustup..
« on: June 12, 2009, 11:35:09 PM »
What Letterman said about Sarah Palin and her 14 yr old daughter is despicable..but no mopre dispicable than liberals are inclined to say at all times.
Suppose Rush or O'Reilly had said basically the same thing about Michelle Obama and one of her daughters! Would the reaction from the moribund media been the same ? You and I both know better, even though liberals claim Rush to be an "entertainer"!

Frankly, I think the reason is this:
Sarah Palin is a decent, family values, hard working, beautiful, God fearing, hunting, Bible believing, honest Christian 100% woman. That is everything her female detractors are not..and liberal men are ruled by their banshee women, so that is where some of the babble comes from.
Secondly, she represents the lifestyle and values that many Americans hold to...so the libs genuinely fear her.

If there happens to be someone here that has fallen for the bias-media spin about her, tell us please, why you think she is so bad. I don't want to hear "spin'..just tell us the 5 W's of journalism, which most new groups have forgotten..who, what, when, where, why and how..

As for Letterman being given some "slack" because he is a commedian..spare me ! Being a commedian doesn't give a person liscense to be a pig !  I understand he is sensitive when anyone asks about his wife or illegitimate child...hmmmm.

The resolution I would like to see is for Letterman to be put out on the tundra alone, face-to-face with Mr Palin...and let him repeat his stupid remarks.. :D ;D
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

Since you're probably not watching that kind of TV, I should point out that such language is very commonly directed at people like Palin. Usually, however, it is cable TV actors doing it. The difference in this case is that Letterman is a high profile personality on network TV.

Has anyone mentioned that those shows are taped four or five hours before they are aired? CBS had plenty of time to intervene to edit out the comments. Apparently it is not just Letterman, it is his writers, his producer, his director, and his employer that are at fault here.

The people on the left are allowed to be rude and insulting to people on the right.  More media bias.

Letterman should have to swallow his front teeth for that one.  It is normal for liberals to make tasteless wise cracks and then give the appearance of being contrite while "apologizing" after having trashed someone.

Maybe we could convince Letterman into doing a show in Anchorage.  Gurantee someone would clean his clock.  Take him for a hike along Campbell Creek.

I did call Kelloggs and the Olive Garden, to express my concern about their sponsorship of the Letterman Show.  Both said they are pulling their sponsorships.  Kellogg said they are pulling all sponsorship from CBS, Olive Garden said they have already pulled all sponsorship of the letterman show.  Lets wait and see.

They're both going to milk it for all it's worth.
Letterman needs to boost his ratings against Conan O'Brien and Palin may have inadvertantly given him a boost.
Palin will use this to boost her position in the Republican party.
It's politics as usual, and good entertainment!

I notice a distinct difference in her live interviews now that she is not under the control of the GOP handlers.  She is much more fluid, natural and coherent when she is free to speak her own words.  I am still very much impressed by her and hope that she will take another shot at the WH.

  Matt;
Ditto here to Palin...she doesn't need a party hack to lead her ticket next time though. How refreshing it would be to see a real family in the WH.

Letterman has not made any kind of apology for himself or CBS over this. I'm kind of old school and really dont appreciate the Late Show type of humor so I dont watch it myself but I hope those that do will put pressure on the network to clean up it's act.
Take care,

Letterman apologized for what he said. Absolutley wrong in what he said. Here is where Palin, should have done something different. I take Letterman, and all the media type's just like him this way. They have the mentality of a 7 year old, and the morale's of Clinton. Instead of taking this incident out for several days in the press, maybe she just should have said, considering who it came from, I couldn't expect anything better, and maybe in another 10 years, he'll have the ability of Johnny Carson.  gypsyman

I'm glad to see Letterman apologized - though I haven't checked out the apology. What was getting to me was that Letterman was skating on this while a radio station canned  Don Imus for his rude remark about a girl's college basket ball team (for 1 yr).  I'd still like to see Letterman at least furloughed for a few months. Letterman was scripted, I don't know if Imus was. Its about time all media could lead a move to people talking respectfully and decently to and among each other. Time to end the shock jock rubbish and so on.

Come to think of it, I think GB here is a leader in decency. That's why I frequent the site - people usually behave themselves here.

Sourdough, I like the the Campbell Cr. walk idea - take down the bear closure signs first. Or the tundra walk - we have a serious crop of mosquitoes coming on right now. Or maybe Sarah could have Davey come out here and try to keep up with her on her set net site. I think we have an  opening tomorrow. Give the city boy about 4 days of mud, blood, fish slime, rain  and wind and he'd learn just how tough the lady is.

Must be someone saw an apology that I did not see. Fox aired what Letterman & CBS tried to pass off as an honest apology...but actually was neither. I looked for just a couple words of remorse, such as "I was wrong" or "I sincerely apologize"..wasn't there.

The new apology from last night:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,526525,00.html

Quote
"I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future," Letterman told the studio audience.

Quote
He said he didn't know that Palin's 14-year-old daughter was attending the game with her.

"Now people are getting angry and they're saying, 'Well, how can you say something like that about a 14-year-old girl, and does that make you feel good to make those horrible jokes about a kid who's completely innocent, minding her own business,' and, turns out, she was at the ball game," Letterman said.

"I had no idea she was there. So she's now at the ball game and people think that I made the joke about her. And, but still, I’m wondering, 'Well, what can I do to help people understand that I would never make a joke like this?' I’ve never made jokes like this as long as we've been on the air, 30 long years, and you can't really be doing jokes like that. And I understand, of course, why people are upset. I would be upset myself."

Quote
Palin issued a statement after the broadcast early Tuesday, saying she accepted the late night host's apology.

Letterman apologizes (Updated, includes Palin response, video and transcript)

Update, Tuesday morning:

Here's Gov. Palin's response to Letterman apology, posted early this morning on her Facebook page:

"Of course it's accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who 'joke' about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve.

"Letterman certainly has the right to 'joke' about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction. And this is all thanks to our U.S. Military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America's Right to Free Speech - in this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect."

Original post from Monday afternoon:

From the New York Times:

David Letterman directly apologized to Gov. Sarah Palin and her daughters on his program Monday night, saying he took responsibility for a joke that had offended Ms. Palin, her family, and her supporters.

Mr. Letterman opened the desk portion of his show with the apology in which he said he wanted to say he was sorry to “to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke.” Two weeks ago on his “Late Show” program on CBS, he had joked about Governor Palin attending a Yankee game with her daughter.
