Fixed power for a .375H&H
« on: June 13, 2009, 03:04:50 PM »
A fixed 4x will be OK but I prefer a fixed 6x. My Ruger #1 .375 is fun to shoot but I don't want to ruin a good variable.  I will buy a Leupold FX II or FX 3 if I have to. I know they can take the pounding. I don't see many other fixed power scopes to choose from and nothing with the 4.4" eye relief of the Leupold. Eye relief is very important at the bench. Any other thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.

:DVman, I am not sure what you will use your 375 for, but I had a fix  power on mine for a while. It now supports a 3-9 leupold. The reason is not for shooting at longer ranges, but for picking a good hole through the brush for a good shot. I use mostly vari powered scopes, and usually have them at their highest power. This may not work for most, but with a fixed power or 4 or 6 I could not pick the spot I wanted when hunting in heavy brush. The Leupolds will take it, others I cannot say. You can keep the power down when still hunting, and zoom it up if a shot presents its self and you need to pick a spot to shoot though. :) The only thing I would add is I shoot a bit almost everyday, so this is a familiar routine for me. But for my money, fixed powers are a thing of the past.  I still have some and use them on specialized rifles, but for a rifle I use under normal hunting conditons, it will be a vari. power. ;)

I prefer a fixed 2 power or a varible 1 to 4 power on my 375. Plenty of eye relief and works for the ranges of the round

I stumbled on a new Nikon Omega 3-9x40 on sale. Nikon claims it is beefed up to handle 12 ga and Magnum BP. Best of all it has 5" eye relief at 9x and over 5.5" at 3x. Lifetime warranty too. I just mounted it. Looks and feels perfect. Hope to get to the range this week. Thanks for the input folks.

;) Vman Let me know this scope works out. There are many fine scopes out there, but I have used Leupolds so long, I hesitate to use other brands. ;)

On my .375H&H, I have an elite 3200 in 1.5x-4.5x with the FireFly reticle.  It's been an awesome scope for me!

The Leupold 1.5-5 VX-3 would be hard to beat - 5.3 inches of eye relief at 1X and 3.7 at 5X.

WYO,
I posted in the Big Bore section this week my results with the Nikon. As previous posts mentioned Leupold is always my first choice, too but I wanted more than 5X cause the .375 has pretty longe range capability, I wanted a brand that I knew was durable, and I had to have as much eye relief as I could get. I am in no position to put out 400 to 600 or more dollars so the 3-9X Omega with a full 5" of eye relief at 9X for $200 was irresistable. My 2 range sessions have now convinced me I made a good choice. The extra eye relief has eliminated the "near death" experiences I had with a previous scope and hence eliminated the flinch. My groups are now half the size they were with the same loads and I have close to a MOA rifle with very stout loads. It's nice to be happy.

5" at 9x?  Wow...that's excellent.  How do you rate the optics on the Omega?

The optics live up to the Nikon name. They advertise as 5" eye relief but mine actually has 4.9" at 9X and 5.5" at 3X. Wife had to help me measure. It will take a little time to get used to the ballistic drop circles in the view but other than that I am very impressed.

Depending of the yardages you plan on shooting eather a 2X and no more than a 4X. A 2X scope will give you a good point of aim on deer size game at 200 yrds. and alittle more and a 4X to 500 yrds. If you are going to haunt dangerious game definately the 2X. You want to be able to find the target fast when they get close.
