Good evening Montanan, MT_Sourdough, dpe, Southpaw, Forster, Atlaw, pab1, newstart2k, Skunk, kitchawan kid, lurker, CJ, Bilmac, thxmrgarand, Syncerus, Mcwoodduck, Brennemanj83, Old Shooter,TY22, Canon6, burntmuch, Grimjim, CJ, Bilmac, rparsons934 wis_sharpshooter, BBF, Blue Duck, billy_56081, hunt-m-up, Gun Runner and Chilachuck.

Well another nice day—weather wise.  Not so good otherwise.  Granddaughter heads home to Illinois tomorrow.  I thoroughly enjoy having her here.   She is 14 years old and still has just a touch little kid in her, but she is becoming a young woman there is no doubt about that.  I hope she never looses the kid part and will always go gopher hunting with me.

We made one last run at the gophers this afternoon. Little over 200 rounds fired.  I was watching her shoot and I have to say she was hitting in the 80% plus range. See seems to be a natural shooter.

I popped two gophers in two shots this afternoon at 149 yards.  They were standing over a hole and I took a double shot.  The front one went down.  The back one moved a bit and started licking its belly.  I took aim for the second shot at the back one and it just seemed that it fell over before the shot got there.   I am not confident enough to call this shot a double, but it was close.  Any kill at 149 yards with the 17 Hornady Mach 2 is something to talk about and a double at that range with this cartridge would be bragging material.   Today was a good day for the 17, hardly a breath of air.

Just after this double, Granddaughter yelled at me, “Grandpa, what’s that?”  Off in the near distance was a badger moving across the prairie.  Now the landowner where we were hunting is very clear, leave the coyotes and foxes alone, kill as many gophers as you can, and kill every single badger you see.  He has a big hate on for badgers.  Local lore says he was riding a horse that stepped in a badger hole and the horse had to be put down, and he went to the hospital.

Well I did what he said.  I used my Rem. 700 VLS .223 and shot it.  I was going to let the Granddaughter shoot it, but she had problems seeing with the 12X scope the other day shooting rock chucks, so I shot it.  This is one of the largest badgers I have seen.  I have one larger mounted, but it isn’t larger by much.

Sorry the granddaughter is leaving so soon Double D.  My 5 Guests are leaving monday, these 2 months have just disappeard!  They have become part of our family so will be a sad day here as well.  Is she up for hunting this fall?  That would be another nice trip for her and "Gramps". ;)   Day started not so good, but after getting things sorted out, ended great.  Magnificent Montana day, low 80's low humidity and light breeze.  Perfect for shooting and that is what we did.  More of the same Sunday.  DP

Sorry she is leaving to head back home, you know she will be dreaming about coming back..... soon.

I can't wait to take mine out, even though I got a few years to go to be able to do that.

Douglas your shooting that 17 HM2 at that range is great, especially with a bullet that can get blown off course with a sneeze of breeze along the way.  I was looking at these rifles yesterday in this very caliber..... who knows I may show up over your place with a new rifle and scope in hand.

I don't see her coming back for deer season...can you see a school in Illinois giving a excused absence for deer hunting!!!

Jon, you are right about the 17HM2 getting tricky in the wind, but we have so little wind here that it's not much of issue...  ::)  Most gophers are shot at 50 yards and less anyway. This is the best effective range for the 17HM2.  Get the gun and come on over.  You won't regret it!

Well Doug , you are probably off to Gt.Falls by now . Great time hunting with Grandaughter . I'm sure each trip out with you will be a life time memory for her . bless you for that .

The 17m2 , Two fellows from Illinois were here and one had the 17m2 . I'm impressed with the ranges they were knocking gophers down at . More than a few 140 to 150 yard shots and lots of 100 yard shots with it . It is a Marlin bolt SS rig .  I was impressed .
So ..... yesterday I had to make a parts run to the Big city ... No 17M2's available , they said they had to discount them to cost to get rid of them . Perhaps one will show up on a used rack some where. Definitely a great shooting round . I have found the cost to shoot is about the same as the .22 . Seems one just dosent miss that much . One shot one gopher.
10/22's are real ammo burners , I think it is the mentality of fast second shots that perhaps ruin the first ?
Any whay the 17M2 is a great gopher round out to 100 yards for sure.

Ernie,

Find a another Martini and we'll line it to 17HM2!

There's a good candidate listed as a Martini Cadet Model 12 on Gunbroker.  It's realy a 1215 and you could sell the sights to buy the liner.  I have the drill and reamer.
